Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

Just wondering if there was enough of us out there to start a group to give & receive advice. I have a 5 1/2 yr old son that suffers from ADHD. He is on meds & they have helped him tremendously! He used to be very violent & could not control his impulses. He started showing signs of ADHD when he was 3 yrs old.
In his last year of preschool, when I would go to participate in the class, I had children always coming up to me & telling me how mean he was. It absolutely broke my heart!!! So this is what led me to put him on a trial run of medication. So far, Kindergarten has been going great for him.

My son was told he is adhd when he was in first grade...we struggled with public schools until he was in the 6th grade...I finally put him in a private Christian school, took him off adderal and he is doing very well...he is now in the 8th grade. I do not really know if he was/is adhd but I know something was very wrong. It seemed to me I was at the school all the time with all sorts of little things he was or was not doing. I still go to school to keep updated on his work and behavior...he seems very normal now. Is there anything I can help anyone with, please ask.

Shockingly enough I have discovered that my son not even 2 yet has ADHD like his father. It has been tough to put up with him until now but luckly my was easily solved right now. I had to take him off all sugars of any kind. He can't have juice which seemed to be the worst for him. He would run through the house screaming and we couldn't get him to sit still for anything. Now he will sit still to read a book and watch T.V. with me. It has been great.

Lana, Glad to hear that she is gaining weight & that she is doing better. Luckily my son hasn't complained of tummy aches. He is still a good eater. We are just having problems controlling his impulsivity. Just yesterday he had to miss his PM recess due to cutting in line & pushing another kid...I am at a loss on how to handle this...He was labeled the "mean" kid of the class last year in preschool, & I've been soooo worried about it starting again this year. I have spoke with his teacher of my concerns & she is doing everything she can to prevent it. I just cried when I got out to my truck after my talk with her this morning. I don't know how to teach him to be nice...I really need advice!!!!

My daughter first started Adderall in kindergarten and it was amazing the difference, however she started having bad stomach pains and feeling sick to her stomach so bad that we had to change. She already wasn't a big eater anyway and is pretty small. The doctor changed her to Ritalin LA lowest dose. The long lasting so that it would work through school and also the regular ritalin in the afternoon. It is much better on her stomach, however she does not really want to eat afterwards so I make sure she eats before taking it and give her vitamins. She also gets prett hot not long afterwards. I believe that is a side effect too. But the meds for adhd all have some side effects of sick stomach and not wanting to eat so they do monitor weight real closely. Madison gained 3 pounds this last time after 2 months so I am glad about that.

Sunshine, my daughter was diagnosed a couple of years ago with add, and is now taking aderall, it made her able to focus and actually want to do her homework, her grades went from not so good to real good. It did suppress her appetite for most of the day, only to leave her pretty hungry later in the day, and if taken too late in the day she stays up too late. But, I don't know the exact difference in ADD and ADHD, I mean I know the h is for hyperactivity but, other than that, I don't know why the meanness at such a young age. But, my advice for his behavior at school or anywhere it matters, just try talking to him about right and wrong and ask him what if that was you would he want to be pushed or mistreated, try to teach him through empathy, or role playing, you be the "mean" kid and show him how he is behaving, and, ask him how it makes him feel, and, tell him he shouldn't treat people any way he would no want to be treated, and, keep doing it until he gets it

I'm an expecting mom. Right now am getting my baby's room ready and look through some of my old things as well , An I have A.D.H.D. myself(I have most all my life) , just the other day looking through my old things I found a poem that my mother gave me when I was in grade 5, I found that having this poem helped in just coping/dealing and understanding what was going on with myself.

My A.D.H.D. Child
by Tracy Nicolaus

He's bouncin' off walls, a super ball gone insane,
He runs through your world like a off-rail freight train,
Interruptions are constant, tantrums galore,
When it's time to do homework, he's gone, out the door.

The drama is constant, oh his foot fell asleep,
He moans and he wails, the theatrics run deep,
School is a nightmare, the teachers are lost,
If they only could see, he is worth the cost.

He is brighter than most, as most kids are,
And with patience and love, I know he'll go far,
But what I must take from well meaning friends
Don't let him do that. Oh these rules that he bends.

You're not a good parent. Your child's really rude.
His temper's Outrageous. He has hands in his food.
He hears this and wonders, just what's wrong with me?
I tell him, You're special, you have A.D.H.D.

Now A.D.H.D. is a gift from above,
It teaches us grown-ups how to strengthen our love.
It helps to teach your teachers, no two kids are the same.
You have awesome energy that could bring you great fame.

You don't need much sleep, you never wear down.
You're silly and funny, when you act like a clown.
You've felt lots of pain from what people have said,
But you pray for those people when you go to bed.

So you try every day to make a fresh start,
For God gifted you with an extra big heart.
As I look at my child, he sees through my soul,
My heart feels like busting, as I realize my goal.

I know this boy like no one else could,
He's a blessing to me, he's strong and he's good.
So I'll love him and guide him through the worst of the worst,
And he'll make a great man (if I don't kill him first).

I'm kidding of course 'cause I know what's to be,
When I look in his eyes, I see a reflection of me.

My daughter is now 12, she also started showing signs at age 3. She has been on meds since she was 4. I love meds! My daughter is since been diagnosed with bipolar and ODD and because of her growing size, we are playing the guessing game again with the meds. She is now on Adderall XR and it is not working so well, she is becoming increasingly violent again. She was doing well on Concerta, but topped out on the dosage. She is also in therapy. I think therapy helps some but it is so expensive. Between therapy and the meds we are going broke. Remember that adhd counts as a disability and we just found that out. She now has a medical card which makes a big difference.

My seven year old has had difficulties are school since kindergarten. Now in second grade the school has tested him and found he is showing significant signs of ADD. I am struggling with getting his teacher to modify his lessons and homework. The principal is super supportive, as is the school social worker... somehow we all need to be on the same page.

Logan is seeing a specialist on Oct 14th and we are hoping that with a medical doctor's diagnosis we can then get better accomodations for Logan in school. I think that Logan will probably begin some sort of medication at that time.

Hello! My son is 11 yrs old, he was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 7 yrs old. We've had him on and off just about every med out there, but he hasn't been able to tolerate any of them. He would have an upset tummy and virtually no appetite. We are still looking for the right treatment, but doing the best we can, my son is not violent, but rather has a very hard time focusing and staying on task with his homework. He absolutely hates school right now which is a concern for us, but we are trying to deal with this by keeping the lines of communication open with him and discussing with his teacher what we can do to help keep him interested in school. He is a very bright boy and gets along well with his friends. It is great to have this forum to share with other parents who are going through similar circumstances!

I used to have trouble focusing on work but what I found to help me keep focus and still do for any work I do is listening to music and/or calming music.
