Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

So here's the sitch. I am in some desperate need of birth control. I have one beautiful little girl, but that's enough for me (at least for now) So I'm gonna break down my issues and if you feel like you can suggest something, don't hesitate to throw it at me.

1. The Pill--Ortho Tri-Cyclen KILLS my sex drive. That's not the kind of birth control I was looking for (disinterest).

2. The Shot--Ortho Evra gives me cysts. I don't know why. For the most part, they're harmless, but every so often one of those little mofos ruptures and its hell on earth.

3. The Patch--I'm hesitant to try this because my sister developed DVT while using it.

4. Condoms--They suck. Nuff said.

Does anyone know anything about Mirena or a similar IUD? I understand the inherent risks (PID, etc.) but I'd like to hear from someone who's tried it--how's your sex drive? Any unexpected weight gain or crazy mood swings?

OR

Nuva Ring--any comments/testimonials/warnings?

Thanks Ladies

I work in a pharmacy and we dispense Nuvaring at least 5 times a day. I have never heard anything negative said about it, although I would think the side effects would be about the same as the pill.

I use the Mirena and I really like it. I got it after Baby #6, this past March, and I've been in love ever sense! It's a great product and I have no issues.

*My periods are lighter (after the first two)
*No cramping
*No worries :)

I have heard people with issues, but I'm not one of them.

Good luck!

I had a reaction to the Nuva Ring........... so did another girl I knew that also had a child. My childless friends are loving theirs though. I had the Mirena IUD inserted several weeks ago and I love the freedom of it. I am still breastfeeding, so my periods are a little irregular, but I truely feel that things are beginning to settle into place. No pills, no shots. It is just as effective as the pill immediately and can last up to 5 years, or until you decide to take it out to get prego again. WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE - you really should consult with your doctor to see what method is good for you and your lifestyle.

Yeah i already talked to the doc...I just wanted to see what people liked or hated, for a little guidance. Also, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of DVT risks with birth control. My sister just got another one. It really can happen to any woman, smoker or non.

I am on the mirena thing and for the first month i didnt think i was ever going to stop bleeding. It wasnt enough to really do anything but annoy me. But over the next two months it slowed down and finally regulated and now my period is normally light and not very long. It was a very simple process at the ob and didnt take long at all. The thing is so tiny you dont feel it. When they first put it in though they have to cut the strings attached to it which it doesnt affect it at all but if they dont cut them short enough then your partner can get poked by them and my husband said it didnt feel the best in the world. Other then that its put in and you forget about it. I am actually planning on having mine removed next year to try for a boy since I have 2 girls and I still want a boy but after that I'm done.
I hope this was helpfull and goodluck finding whats right for you.

I have been on Yasmin for 2.5 years and it has been wonderful and now that they FINALLY came out with a generic its even cheaper!! I was getting mine through mail order in 3 month supplies for $50 which isn't bad either. Look into Yasmin.

I miss norplant. It was the best IMO.

How about the IUC (interuterincontraceptive) Mirena. Works for 5 years and no period! I LOVE IT! It hasn't affected me negatively at all. No weight gain, no mood swings or no low sex drive.
It is hard to find something you can depend on and then have it taken off the market for various reasons. Remember the Sponge and Norplant?

I want to take this all the way through to THE CHANGE!

Good luck!

Your husband needs to have a vasectomy. It is a procedure that has a recovery time of one or two days. Once he is tested to be clear then you can stop worrying. I was on the pill for a long time and went off because of wanting to have my first daughter. Then I was on them again and went off them because they made me a witch! I had my second daughter and then my husband had the vasectomy. He felt that the female cycle should not be altered and that it was the quickest and least painful solution to our birth control for him to be fixed.

As I have suffered from cysts and many other issues, I have tried Nuva Ring which I like and I like that you only have to worry about it once a monthe however if you are like me I can not pay the $50 a month. I am going to have the Mirena implanted. This is only going to cost me my one doctor vist to put it in. Accorrding to my Dr. this is ideal for people who do not want to have a child for many years and is better than the copper or metal implant that has been used in the past. Mirena does not have hormones it blocks the egg from being fertilized.

A Vasectomy is not for us...we're in our twenties. We may not think we want any more kids now, but in ten years, when I'm 33, maybe I will. Thanks anyway, though.

It is reversible. I know a person that had three more kids after getting her husband's reversed.
