Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

So here's the sitch. I am in some desperate need of birth control. I have one beautiful little girl, but that's enough for me (at least for now) So I'm gonna break down my issues and if you feel like you can suggest something, don't hesitate to throw it at me.

1. The Pill--Ortho Tri-Cyclen KILLS my sex drive. That's not the kind of birth control I was looking for (disinterest).

2. The Shot--Ortho Evra gives me cysts. I don't know why. For the most part, they're harmless, but every so often one of those little mofos ruptures and its hell on earth.

3. The Patch--I'm hesitant to try this because my sister developed DVT while using it.

4. Condoms--They suck. Nuff said.

Does anyone know anything about Mirena or a similar IUD? I understand the inherent risks (PID, etc.) but I'd like to hear from someone who's tried it--how's your sex drive? Any unexpected weight gain or crazy mood swings?

OR

Nuva Ring--any comments/testimonials/warnings?

Thanks Ladies

I've also tried the Depo shot and many other birth control pills and hated all of them. I just started about 2 months ago taking Yaz birth control pill and I LOVE it. I had pretty bad PMS and period symptoms every month it was like torture. Yaz is the only pill that is clinically proven to help with acne, cramps and bloating. It's a diuretic so you don't retain water while on it. Like I said I've tried many other pills and the depo shot turned me into a monster with no sex drive as well. This pill is great and I highly recommend it!

hi, i just got the Mirena. It wasnt the most comfortable procedure. I researched other options and decided this was best for our family. It doesnt have a lot of hormoneal effects. They say your period gets lighter or may go away completely. I was on yaz. I gained 10 pounds since march. I also think i was having some circulation problems from it. I am older though and i think age becomes a factor with birth control. good luck on your choice.

sorry i forgot to say that there were good parts about Yaz though. It really was good about making your mood better. no PMS. It was great for that.

I have the iud and it is great other than the mood swings. You don't have to worry about taking a pill of getting a shot. Your sex drive is a little bit better.. I would strongly recommend it if you have a little one are the house. You DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEM GETTING INTO THE MEDICINE AND TAKING IT. I have had my iud for about 5mths and I havent gained nany weight. When you first get the iud YOU will bleed for a while but it will go away. I hope i gave you what you were wanting to here and to help you make your choice.

Hi I have Mirena and I love it, No weight gain. No moods swings that are apparent anyways.. LOL Sex drive is still working full speed ahead. It was a little uncomfortable to get put in, the normal crampiness and slight spotting but that went away in a day or two. I don't have periods. The only time I have spotted is when I'm totally stressed out! I have had it for 2+ years. I also had depo for years and loved that too, but they say its not good to be on it for than 5 years. My 21 year old is on that now, and has no problems either. No period with that either. Good luck with your choice!!

So, I feel your pain. I have three kiddos - all of which were conceived on birth control. I currently take the pill - TriSprintec. It's a strong dose of hormones, but doesn't affect my moods, (sexual or irritability) at all, and love it. Doesn't upset my stomach, I don't have hormonal issues the week I'm on my period, good stuff.
Before conceiving my twins, I was on the Nuva Ring. I have germ issues, and wasn't crazy about pulling the dirty one out once I started my period, and my boyfriend could feel it during sex. After my son was born, I was on the shot, and gained about 30 pounds, and felt hungry all the time.

I used the Ring for about a year and had no problems. I am very forgetfull so the pill was just too risky for me. After I had my daughter 7 months ago I got the Mirena. I have had no problems. Cramping is mild compared to what i used to get. The only thing I have a problem with is my periods how ever I have only had it for 4 months. right now they are a little longer but very light so they are just annoying!!

either way they are both great choices for me. Oh with the Ring; my husband did say that he could feel it every now and then but not enough to stop using it.

good luck

From a healthcare standpoint (worked in pharmacy for 7 years and now in trauma research) you are going to have side effects with any sort of hormonal birth control method. I think that anything both invasive (IUD) and hormonal puts you at more risk for more side effects. This is certainly something you would want to discuss with your OB first, especially if you have had issues with cysts in the past, and you have a family history of deep vein thrombosis.

Personally, I stopped taking birth control about a year and a half ago due to wanting to protect my reproductive health, however I have never been pregnant either.

Good luck!

Absolutely. Another girl I work with had the same issue with DVT and birth control. She isn't a smoker either. She is now on Coumadin for life and is unable to take any sort of hormonal birth control.

I had a reaction to the Nuva Ring........... so did another girl I knew that also had a child. My childless friends are loving theirs though. I had the Mirena IUD inserted several weeks ago and I love the freedom of it. I am still breastfeeding, so my periods are a little irregular, but I truely feel that things are beginning to settle into place. No pills, no shots. It is just as effective as the pill immediately and can last up to 5 years, or until you decide to take it out to get prego again. WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE - you really should consult with your doctor to see what method is good for you and your lifestyle.

Yeah i already talked to the doc...I just wanted to see what people liked or hated, for a little guidance. Also, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of DVT risks with birth control. My sister just got another one. It really can happen to any woman, smoker or non.

I've had the Mirena for almost 9 months now and I really like it!! I have a very light period, higher sex drive, no acne or weight gain. I get ovarian cysts too and my OBGYN said that the Mirena should make the cysts go away. Also, I love it because its zero maintanence and lasts 5 years. And the fact that you can have sex anytime and not have to worry about getting pregnant! I would recommend Mirena to anyone...my sister got one after me
