Broken Engagement: What Would You Do With the Ring?

I called off the engagement because he was cheating. I kept the ring, and the deposits from the reception hall and honeymoon. I went back to school with the money. So I spent my honeymoon in Geology 1101 and Philosophy 1105.

...and I lost the ring :-/

Well, no matter how you feel about the "Jerk" an engagement ring is given with the condition of marriage and if the "jerk" chose to sue, he'd know doubt get the ring back or an amount equaling its value.

Now, outside of the law and this situation presented itself...... I'd keep the ring, but only to remind me of the bullet I just side-stepped.

I would have kept it and sold it for scrap......... he is a loser..... who in the H.... does he think he is god's goft I don't think so...........

I would have sold the ring and donated some of the proceeds to an abused woman's charity, and made that known in the media. Maybe that will cause ABC to rethink intentionally humiliating a young woman on TV while millions watch. SHAME on ABC for allowing as indecisive cad like Jason to do that so publicly.

I broke off my engagement once, he didn't want the ring back, and I didn't want it, so I pawned it, and got $100 out of it, it was worth it, to get rid of the verbally abusive guy!!!!!

I would give it back, who would want a reminder of one of the worst days in your life. He bought it and it would not sit well with me to return it to the store for profit. Let him have the humiliation of having to return the ring.

I've never heard of anyone suing over an engagement ring...plus, I view it as a gift - yes, it is given and worn to show your intent to wed, but it is a gift none-the-less.

It definitely depends on who breaks off the engagement. To me accepting the ring means that you, the woman promise to marry. So if he does something to end the engagement, keep the ring, because were it not for him you would have kept your promise. Now on the other hand if you do something to end the engagement its only fair you return the ring to him... if he asks for it. If he doesn't ask for it, if it isn't his family heirloom... KEEP IT! I love jewelry ;-)
