Need to know how do people address their MILs.
If she tells you to call her "mom", do you comply?
thanks

I call her by her first name. I like her but I only have 1 Mom and I adore her.

Did she ask you to call her mom?

No but I wouldn't regardless. My first mother-in-law did and I never called her Mom either. I called her Mrs. and her last name. I just don't feel comfortable doing that. I am way too close to my Mom and would feel disrespectful towards her. She is my only Mom and a best friend also.

Personally, I would just ask and find out how she would like to addressed and go with that... unless you guys are really close and call her mom. I call my MIL mom. I just called her whatever my husband was calling her. They are from Guam and aren't even close to being into what's happening in the world or updated either... Old timers I guess. She just turned 75. Love her to death though..

Well, considering when I first met my husband's mom, she was extremely jealous, and told him I only wanted her house (????), she now regrets how she first treated me now that she knows me, but it is and will always be...Mrs. last name.

Does any of you address your mother-in-law by a nickname? My friend came up with a name for her FUTURE mother-in-law. Although there is no man in her life at this moment, my friend is determined to call her FUTURE mother-in-law Tootsy. Knowing her, she will. Any comments?

I call mine Sandra.

But I'm also a MIL to three amazing twentysomethings. Josh calls me Suzie. Stephen calls me mom or Snuzorama/Snuzarootskie. Kristin calls me Suz or Snuz. I think it's kind of like the whole gramma/grandma/nana/GiGi thing. It emerges from the relationship. : )

I call her MOM but then she refers to herself as Mrs. Mendoza... It gets really confusing at times but guess what, this has been happening for TEN years now. She likes this. I tell my husband that he needs to settle this. He needs to talk to his Mother and find out what I am, a Daughter-in-law or just nothing. Of course he has done nothing to help solve this issue and as most men, he probably will not do anything about it.
I hope you can get better that I can. I try to talk to my Mother-in-Law but she chooses to not listen. I hope if you speak to your Mother-in-Law, she will choose to listen and really hear what you have to say. That is what really should happen. You both have to discuss this.
I really hope you and your Mother-in-Law can come to a resolution. Speak to her and ask her what she really does prefer.
Good luck and God bless...

The only person I address as mom is my mom. Other than that, I'm on a first name basis with my MIL.

For a while I didn't call her anything. I didn't know what to call her. She told me that I could call her mom but, I didn't feel comfortable calling her mom because she didn't feel like a mother to me.(Because of extenuating circumstances.) I think she wanted me to but I just couldn't despite the fact that I almost instantly called my GMIL Grandma because she just felt like all that a grandma would be. So eventually I settled on Mama Jackie when I am around her. Which still feels weird and contrived. But when I refer to her in conversation she is just Jackie or "your mother'. Beside I'm close to my mom. Matter of fact I still call my mom MOMMY even though I'm 29.

no, if you are not feeling com table calling her that off the jump, let her know, tell her it has to grow on you a little bit.

Suzanne,
you come across like a very lovable MIL. I'd like to interview you for my current project,
research modern mothers-in-law. Are we still using that old stereotype? Modern women, old problems, new solutions. Why your DIL thinks that you are great? Hope to hear from you! http://bit.ly/VpTE9
