This is NOT ok. 37-year-old Melissa Catherine Smith-Means created controversy when she dragged her child on a leash in a Verizon store, and someone got it on tape.
I've saw the cute little "monkey" leashes on kids before, I can go along with it for some kids. I have a nephew who is autistic and will not stand beside his mom even for 1 minute at a checkout. She puts one on him for safety. However, what this woman did is child abuse.
I have not seen the vidio.....And I do not believe a kid should be draged around by any means....But someone could not steal your child if you were attached to them...It only takes a second that your attention could go somewhere else. So a leash can't be all bad..............
Putting a child on a leash is just wrong. That's the simplest way to put it.
It even appears that she is dragging the child TO the counter, not out the door which makes the situation even more awful. I can't recall where I read this, FoxNews.com maybe, but she may have even stated that her child enjoys being on a leash!
While there are valid uses for leashes with some children (ie. children with impulse control issues who may dart out somewhere), this is not the proper use of a leash. While I think a firing squad is harsh, making them no better than the offender, I do feel it's abusive behavior. Child protective services should be called in. I wonder if the person who filmed this then called the authorities or did anything further to help assist that child. We're quick to catch something on tape to throw on youtube but did they help the poor child being dragged. Did anyone in the store do anything? It didn't appear so. Makes them somewhat culpable too.
My wife and I were in a Big Lots Monday night, we went in 2 hours before closing, on purpose! I'm in a wheelchair, and she was pushing me as usual, I wish I had 5 of those child LEASHES , I WOULD HAVE SHOWED A "MOTHER AND FATHER" HOW TO HAVE CHILDREN ACT IN A STORE. I t was like some kind of animal act!! These kids were about 3-4 aisles away from Mom and Dad the whole time, create havoc the whole time, and it was on me!!! I wanted to beat them, but I knew I would go to jail for ADULT ABUSE ON THE PARENTS!!!!!, YOU THOUGHT I MEANT THE KIDS??? THEM TOO!!!
I DO see she was later arrested. Which is as it should be! I did see everyone in the video watch her do this and just go about life as usual. Just standing around or back to assisting customers. Bravo to the brave person who cried foul!
I have no problem with them when used properly. Just this past weekend I went to a very busy, very crowded aquarium with my 2 sons. I used the cute monkey leash on my 3 year old. He is very hyper and rambunctious and would run off if given the chance. He also doesn't seem to know a stranger. He'll talk to anyone. I was out of town, in a large city, and without the leash I could possibly have lost my child in the chaos. The thought alone just scares me to death!
I am the mother of twins. One of my children is Autistic. At the time we did not know.It was before the diagnosis. We went out of the country when they had just turned 3 years.I had them both on they're own leash because they where very active toddlers and it was the only way to keep them in my sights.I did not always agree to this method but it was the only way I new that they would be close and not end up wandering off.If she was walking without any regard to the childs natural gate then I agree, she was wrong. But if she was careful and the child was pulling in another direction, it may have looked as if she were an out of control mom.
I have never even thought about putting my children on leashes and at one point I had 3 toddlers running around. I have twin girls who are a year and a half older than my youngest and I have never had to resort to anything other than holding their hands and teaching them not to go away from me. I hope children's services were called!
maybe the picture looks bad and the kid is having fun being drug around on the floor....Things are not always as they appear to be..I can remember my brother and I dragging each other around on the kittchen floor.
