As a nationally award-winning parenting columnist,I still struggle with that fine line between relevance and exploitation. On the one hand, my personal experiences provide entertainment and (on a good day) insight into this complex world of parenting. But as my husband says, "How important is it for the world to know what our kids had for breakfast?"
How about all of you? Do you find that you reveal more based on the "anonymity" of your readers?
No, even though I haven't published much in the way of personal information (i.e. children's names, pictures, etc.) I still am rather cautious about the details I release. There are still some people I know personally who read my blog, and my spouse and children may not appreciate that I tell too much about our family...even if I don't think something is a big deal, they might and prefer others do not know those things. Plus, once something is on the internet it's sometimes difficult to completely remove. It's really more of a respect for my family kind of thing regardless of anonymity.
I tend to publish darn near anything that I feel worth writing about which includes often what I made for dinner. LOL!! Honestly since I don't blog for any particular audience or for profit, I just do it as a form of journal, so it doesn't matter for me.
It depends on where I am blogging and what I am blogging about. I also use my main blog at Multiply as a journal and sometimes I don't share with everyone.
It really depends. I also have given my kids fake names because I'm nervous about that.
I'm not really a blogger, I'm just as a result of this site learning to write about things (its fun) but just what I've read on momlogic and the personal blog sites, people seem fine to write about their families and the latest cute kid thing. I'm sure most people change their names just for protection but the internet does provtde a smoke screen. You can feel free to spill your heart out and while it brings your followers closer, in fact they probably come to think of you as friend because they are able to identify and feel a shared bond. There is still no face to face interaction so while your sharing your thoughts and making people laugh your still maintaining your privacy. Of course if family and friends are reading your post then they already know you and probably expect nothing less:)
I struggle with the same thing. I don't want to bore my readers by detailing every moment of every day ... I'd probably bore myself doing that, but at the same time I love to photograph my children so they are blogged about A LOT. My intention when I started my blog was to chronicle their lives because I'm terrible at baby books and I wanted my family and friends overseas to be able to check in whenever they had time to see what the kids had been up to.
My blog has definitely evolved over the past year from detailing everything to just providing photographs and the very occasional funny story.
I am finding myself becoming more protective over what I post about my kids. I would never post the names of places where they attend regular activities or make it known that other places we visit are close to home. I also never give out where we are going to be. I'll post photos after the event, or put in the occasional tweet from the event, but won't post that we will be somewhere next week or when we will be on vacation. I'm also very careful to protect my husband who is in the military and never give out information about exactly where he is or what he is doing. I try to protect my friends children too and not list the kids by name (unless they too are a blogging family) and keep the shots of other kids to a bare minimum if any at all, depending on the family.
I will spill my guts about the hubby. Because nobody personally knows me on this site. And it's nice to get the opinion of sooooo many different people. Even down to "what did you have for breakfast???" it's funny to see how different we are...yet all the same...
With my blog it's pretty much all fair game...although I'm trying to curb some of my carefree (careless?) attitude towards all things concerning my blog.
The only thing that really pissed people off about my blog is when I wrote about work, but it's a very REAL part of my day-to-day existence and, dammit, my blog is my online journal and a place for me to unleash my feelings (right?).
Other than that...I am trying to be a bit better with things concerning the kids (just like Tonya is)...just using a bit more discretion when posting about events, places, etc.
Writing, whether free thought, jounaling, blogging or the poetic prose(I love so much), is all an art form used to express yourself, The true purpose of writing, is more about the writers benefit than it for the reader. His or her voice manifested into Living and Powerful words. Words strung together together in an endless visual display of feelings, what ever they may be. Your joys your pain, your triumphs and failures, your immaturity or maturity, highs/lows, whether your there or not and only the pen and the paper knows...in this case the keys and screen. It is truly your witness to the world that you were here and had something to say, whether right or wrong, truth or false, a opinion or your version of the story. More often then not, it beats to it's own drum, answers to it's own master and is lead by it's own spirit. The burning desire to speak and be heard, over all the other voices conversing simultaneously in the universe, with no end in sight. One thing the Bible says and I firmly believe is, "When everything else has passed away the Word is here to stay," whether you like or not, read it or not, understand it or not, express it or not, share it, save it or delete it or not! As I have said here before,The gift of poetry from God saved my life, it was and will always be my therapy. I never miss my daily sessions and I swallow every bittersweet pill it dishes out So on this twisted road of life, where ever my enter Voice calls me to go, I will follow...searching...seeking...sharing...sheltering...supporting and singing God's praises. Ultimately finding my way and leaving a trail of words behind me!
Chose your words wisely...but never fail to choose Cynthia aka Mommy Dearest
I like to write about real stuff - funny and true either about food, the kids, the pets or the husband! I won't write anything too revealing but ... hmmm....i may have gotten close at times. I never mention names of our friends and will not post a video unless the others in it say ok.
