my teenage son is eating me out of house and home

when my son stays with me he eats everything in the house, I can't keep snacks around, I can't be sure there is going to be stuff for dinner when I get home from work. He isn't overweight, and he does get out and do stuff but its frustrating on a single mom's salary. When he is at his dad's house, his father locks food up in a cupboard but I don't want to do that but discussions aren't getting me anywhere, neither are consequences. any advice?

first thing you need to let him know, money don't grow on tress, if he is grown enough to work, he can get a job. let him know that if you are coming to my house, I think you need to bring your own food, because right know, I'm living off of one salary, and by you eating me out of house and home, is not the best thing to do.

So it is nice for you to come over, but you need to think, about how you are going to help me in my home, if you are going to eat like that.

Ok, first of all, ALL teenage boys eat a lot! My husband eats us out of house and home as well. I work at a local hardware store and he does construction. So we have a little bit extra than one salary. But you can't punish him for eating! That would be like trying to starve him. What you need to do is figure out if its hunger, or if he is eating out of bordem or if it is something deeper, like emotional about you and his father's seperation. Once you figure out what is really going on, then it will help the situation more. I know that I can't just keep my husband from eating because he is always hungery, its not out of bordem, so I just eat less. I buy stuff for me that I know he wont eat and then I buy lots of stuff for him that I know he loves. We have bills just like everyone else, tons of medical bills now after my surgery, so yes money is tight. But we learn to make do. Over the winter we were surviving on $175 a week. Thats not much, and I know we did it then, so I know we can do it now! And if you are buying more expensive brands, cut back so you can save money and afford to buy in quantity. And if he likes snacks between meals, buy a big box of frozen corndogs that he can eat. That should be able to hold him over until you are able to get home and cook dinner.
I hope that all this helps you out!
