Pitbull attack and deaths are fairly common in the news. Pitbull owners go on about what great dogs they are and other people lament how dangerous they. So what makes some breeds of dog more likely to attack and others not?
Many breeds of dog have a high prey instinct, pitbulls being one of them, labs actually have a pretty high prey instinct although that doesn’t get reported on much atm, poodles also have a pretty bad track record. Why do these breeds have a high prey instinct? Dogs with high prey instincts are more likely to attack young children because they are the size of prey.
Because it is they’re job and they have been breed accordingly; many of the breeds that are likely to bit are either bred for fighting, hunting or guarding. Hunting dogs should be avoided with small children around, because they are hunting dogs, they have high prey instincts. That doesn’t mean you should avoid or be scared of hunting dogs. Many are perfectly safe but they have a higher chance of biting someone if you do not understand them and no how to properly train them. Fighting dogs should just be plan out avoided unless you really know what you are doing and you have the ability to contain them properly. They are breed to be highly aggressive and volatile. Some breeds of working dogs have been breed to be flock guard dogs, like German Sheppard’s, Pulli’s and the like, you should avoid those breeds because they may try to protect their owners from their own children. Guard dogs are safe unless they feel what they are guarding is threatened. That means they can feel rough housing with their owner is a call to arms, they also have a higher rate of jealously.
Many breeds of herding dogs generally are safer because of their long term breeding to get rid of that prey instinct; they don’t want a herding dog to eat the sheep they are supposed to be herding. That is why you rarely hear of a collie biting someone. That doesn’t mean a herding dog won’t bite someone they are just really unlikely to. If they are injured or feel extremely threatened then like almost any animal they will bite.
So did you research what dog to get before you brought them home and do you really understand the difference in breed classes?
