Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

So we all know that Wal-Mart stock is doing well and business is booming while most of us hope we can hang onto our jobs...So why don't we all go work for Wal-Mart?

There has been some interesting discussion in the Fashion Finds group about this on the small town boutique article, so I just couldn't help but add it to the discussion board.

My girlfriend (who might even be reading this) absolutely detests Wal-Mart, but still ends up shopping there on occasion...muttering through her breath up and down every aisle, trying not to breathe in the aura of unhappy employees, greed and child labor.

So...where are you on the "I hate Wal-Mart scale"...or for more fun, tell us why you LOVE it! I have to admit that it's a love hate relationship for me. Love that I can get two large containers of detergent for $5 cheaper than my grocery store...and hate that the checkout clerk looks like she's going to slit her wrists.

Hmmm. What's a mom to do?

Oh geez I know! I hate it because the shopping carts are always gross! The tires on the baskets are always gone or half gone and the seat belts for kids are ruined. You would think with as much money as they make they could at least take care of the baskets. I have to go there because it's the closest place to shop. It's annoying though.

Love the prices, but not the "riff raft" that I deal with when I shop there..........

My husband works at a walmart distribution center. I worked at a regular walmart store and didn't like it to well.So I had to quit. They would stick me in an area to stock or the register and I did not know what I was doing. I just told everyone sorry and that I usually didn't work that area they were just short that night. My husband doesn't really like his job but as he says it's a job. As far as shopping there I do. I think they are cheaper than most of my grocery stores and to be honest I am just trying to save every penny I get.

hate is a strong word i don't like to use, or i try not to use so let me say i don't 'do' walmart. i have issues with just about everything walmart does. cheaper? at the expense of the people working for them in this country and abroad. i refuse to participate in it and would rather spend the extra money at my neighborhood market.

i have been inside a walmart and i will tell you i can find a better quality t-shirt on the clearance rack at macy's for the exact same price on a macy's one-day sale.

I like fact that you can find great deals on items that would cost more at other stores clearly. Especially, appliances for the kitchen. But as it is I am sure everyone can't stand the long lines and slow service. I live in a town were the next closest Walmart is 16 miles away. So on any given day its seems as if half the town is in Walmart. K-mart has suffered so drastically that sometimes I go there and pay more because there is no one in there and there are no lines and I feel that I am being charitable all at the same time. While Walmart is great it is no super substitute for a regular grocery store. Some items you just can't find it at Walmart. Like fresh herbs. They may have the basic herbs, sometimes, if they even have those. Being that its a small town it runs out of certain produce quickly. I went in and they had no zucchini, green onion or eggplant. Couldn't find something as common as basil. which leaves me making an extra trip to Albertson's to find all the things I couldn't find at Wallymart. And everyone knows that Albertson's prices are sky high.

Ms. Monica, Where do you live? I like your response because even though I'm from a small town in MT, I have lived in LA for over 10 years. So I forget that smaller communities have very few options. And certainly if you're buying appliances, $100 saved is not small potatoes. We had three options in my town: Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart. We just had to deal...or drive 7 hours to the nearest "city".

I love Wal-Mart! Honestly before I met my hubby I was a bigger Target person but dollar for dollar Wal-Mart is better for a lot of things so we generally do a lot of our shopping there. The selection for kids and babies is great, prices for electronics are better than most places and I even buy clothes for myself there. I love it! :)

Before moving to Hawaii I had never or maybe I should say rarely shopped at Walmart. Being in a small town on an island, I really have not much option. We do have Costco so since Costco is much more friendly with the same deals, I pretty much go there and Ross has great kids clothes, shoes and household items. It is hard for me to support a company who doesn't support their employees and is not a happy environment.

So yes, I will seek out other stores to support their hard work at customer service.
