What do you Think? Prop 8 Upheld, Gay Marriage Ban Remains

The California Supreme Court has upheld Proposition 8, the controversial voter-approved ban on same sex marriage.

In a decision announced moments ago, the court upheld the law but allowed the marriages of nearly 18,000 couples who were married before the measure's approval last November to remain valid. Thousands plan to participate in rallies all over California today in response to the court's ruling.

How does this affect you and your family? Tell us about it.

Putting limitations on who my kids can or can't marry is a deplorable pill to have to swallow.
Look, ladies who voted yes - if you don't want to marry a girl, then don't. Guys - same goes for you.
It's as simple as that.

I totally agree with sugar mama. People need to be able to make their own lifestyle decisions that best suites them. As long as it in no way harms others.....let them easily make their choice.

For all the hype about california setting an example for the rest of the country..this ban .."prop 8".sets us back to the days of racism, gay bashing and downright stupidity..i dont understand..i am not gay.."so what if two men or women wanna get married" how could that possibly affect anyone besides the people "getting married".really california ..just ask yourself..how could it possibly affect your lives ? will you ever meet the people that will be getting married..probably not..do you think your kids care if two people of the same sex gets married? ..probably not..i am so peeved at the backwards, redneck ,attitude california is putting off by banning it...is this the new crusade's.? have we been set back to medievel times?..its a sad day

Thank God most people still have morals. We do not need gay marriage. They can have wills indicating who gets their property and poa indicating who is in charge should they get sick. Marriage is ordained by God and anyone who lives or promotes gay marriage is of the evil one. This country was founded by christians with christian principles. They will never win this entire country. God will destroy this country if we all become evil. Hell is a real place.

While I fully support equal rights for all people, irrespective of personal lifestyle choices, the law was implemented in the most democratic way: vox populi or the voice of the people. All laws and policies should be chosen this way regardless of what the officials feel or think. I think the Gay Marriage movement has been hurt by the militant attitude of so many activist groups. Only by using rational, lucid arguments and logic will this matter ever be put to rest. Emotional outbursts and angry protests will only serve to distance the general population from the facts and the cause, therefore delaying the passge of any real measure to assist in gays and lesbians in the quest for equal consideration.

I understand that everyone is wanting equality and that is great and I understand many of your points but unfortunately they are not strong enough for me to change my vote should I have to do it again. My one question is this, why are we asked to vote and then we are being told that it will not count? Would the same thing hold true if some people did not want Obama to be President do we then overturn that as well? It is unfortunate for those that lost but do not ask the American people to vote and then want to overturn what they have decided. This does affect my family because of our Religious view. Equality would be if Gays had no rights in the sense that they cannot insure their partner or something like that. They have benefits and many other rights. What right is that they feel they cannot have? The right to call someone of the same sex their "wife" or "husband", really ? We want equality for everyone as one reader put it, but how about women that want to have an abortion and we are quick to tell them NO or oppose it, is their body not their choice (by the way I am not for it...)but let's think that if we want to give equal rights to everyone then we need to be fair straight across the board. As for going back to Medieval times or such, this is not the case. We have come so far as a country and nation...heck we have the very first Black President doesn't that state something for ourselves? There is so much this country has to offer. Why are we so quick to call people Illegal and give them no rights and for those honest ones that come to do the work that so many of us Americans would not do, we choose not to give them equality. I understand and am grateful for everything this country has to offer but don't ask us to vote and then decide you do not like the outcome and want it overturned. Had the vote went in favor would we be having this discussion? I have so much I would like to state but I do not want to be disrespectful or comes across as such to all those that have expressed their opinion because in fact that is exactly what it is...an opinion. As far as going back to "gay-bashing"..this is truly a sad day when someone decided that this is what they want to do for fun. We are in America one if not the greatest nation in the universe...our vote needs to be respected and left alone simple as that.

I was beginning to think that my child was destined to grow up in a dark world, OR that the time had come for the end tide, the days of Revelation. But I was delighted when I heard the news. My delight began with the event at the Miss America Pageant, then became escalated with the web news. I do admire Carrie Prejan for her forthrightness. I think things will only improve, although I do realize that these type of beliefs will never disintegrate....Not for some time to come.

I love everyone and RESPECT whatever preferences anyone has. I am a heterosexual woman and gay people are sooo fun, smart intelligent and I can go on. Who one choses I believe is truly ones business. In my life time I have not witnessed any heterosexual tee shirts, signs etc...announcing anyones heterosexualness!!!! Almost everyones loves sex. What I have not been able to understand is why the term GAY has to be announced, and then why is there a GAY community etc... The term GAY just says to the world..."I like the same sex and prefer to sleep with someone of the same sex"...That is so personal the same as is a heterosexual relationship. Why announce this to the world. I think that the core problem to all of this and what makes people uncomfortable is the fact that being gay is not personal and again it is announced and it does cause confusion, it causes people to second guess their own sexuality and this applies to people of all ages. Yes, there have always been gay people throughout history and in the bible their were gay people, but to change any part of the constitution just to satisfy one group does not make sense. Keep the Constitution out of your bedroom! I am just being real. For gay and heterosexual couples...do your own thing..because if you live together anyway it becomes common law anyway...do your wills, living trust accordingly and do not let the world or people or a constituion dictate your preference and rock your happiness. Whether gay or straight..let people and children make their own decisions and preferences.

Love to Everyone,
Marcella

People who are as closed minded as you make me fear for my children's future. You spout the word of God, saying homosexuality is a sin and those who support it are evil. But yet you always pick and choose what part of the bible and its teachings you want to follow. You are supposed to accept everyone in to your heart. Not only those who you and the church approve of. Shame on you and everyone who discriminates against people who are different than you.

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
