Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

For the moms of Christian Momlogic, Christmas is more than just presents under a tree. It's a celebration of our faith and love for Jesus.
But it's also family time. It's creating traditions. It's spiritually inviting Christ into your home and celebrating with your loved ones.

Let's explore all kinds of traditions. Share yours with the group. How do you center of your faith? What fun things do you do with your kids? What recipes do you pull out ONLY on Christmas? How do you wrap your gifts, choose them, or surprise the kiddos?

I cannot wait to hear what you have to say!

One year we made a birthday cake. That was a long time ago. We have several traditions. We try to go to the in-laws on opposite years that we go to my family. We either drive to IL or VA from MN. I think this year we'll be staying home. Staying home means we go out and cut down our own tree, which I LOVE to do. I wrap my "Santa" gifts in wrapping paper that isn't used on any of the other gifts and I make "Santa's" name swirly and fancy. The only time I make chocolate-mint frosted cookies is at Christmas time! I think this year I'd like to read the Christmas story! When I was growing up and when we visit my family, we always go to a midnight mass. That's the only time I ever go to a Catholic church and it's amazing how all that tradition never leaves you! I love that part of my heritage.

This is one of my favorite things to share. This tradition started with our family when my children were very small and then spread into our church community. Every year we make "poor boxes." The children decorate empty oatmeal boxes or something similar with constuction paper, photos, stickers, glitter and more. Throughtout the year we "glean" from our spare change, rebates etc and put in the poor box. This goes along with (Leviticus 19:9-10) " 'When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.

Then we come together as a family and with friends who participate and celebrate what God has done for the year. The children break open the boxes and poor them into a bid. No one is allowed to count their own gleannings, everything is counted together. The gleanings go to someplace different every year. The first year --almost 30 years ago-- bought a bike for missionary in India. Since then we've helped several orphanages around the world, prison ministries, homeless families, bought bibles for churches around the world--every year God leads us to help someone different.

The children love this event and squeal and laugh as they open their offering boxes. Then traditionally the single adults and those without kids in our group help the little ones decorate their next year's boxes. It's really cool tradition that my hubby started with our family, but never thought it would bless us so for all our lives.--

An afternoon of lefse making with the extended family. Many of the family is within a day's driving distance, so it makes for a fun time. Those good old Norwegian's know how to serve up some awesome holiday food. Just being together over the Christmas Season and remembering the real reason that we Celebrate at this joyous time of year. The last couple years our immediate family has delivered Christmas surprises to church members that have struggled the past year. Each year our church reaches out to a group of people within our community. Last year we delivered gift certificates to families that had suffered servere flood damage within the past year. The year before we delived gift cards to neighbors of our church...A great way to reach out to those. Oh, and the year before, cards were delivered to people that were working Christmas Eve- Restaurant workers, hotel staff, gas station attendants, hospital E.R.'s, lots of people do have to work! Great memories and hopefully our boys have seen what an impact those gift cards are to these people. People were very appreciative!

This will be my baby's first Christmas where she kind of knows what is going on! (She was only 2 months last time!) We want to start introducing her to the story of Christ's birth so we plan on buying her a nativity set that is made for babies. That way, we can share the story with her in a more tangible way! We also plan to sing some Christmas songs, especially ones that really tell the story of Jesus!

We sing "Happy birthday Jesus" and get involved with as many church activities as possible. Jesus IS the reason for the season!

Christmas has always been held on Xmas eve. I had everyone together,my ex-husband was always invited ,I felt the holiday is for the children , allowing them to be a part of a magical evening. I have a manger that was out ,a tree and I know the kids looked forward to celebrating Christ's birth.
The holidays are about kindness and sharing.
I also made plenty of food and I had plenty of people there to join in .
I do make a fruit ,veggie and shrimp platters. I have to make twice baked potatoes ,something they all request.Turkey and a Prime Rib ,I just started to make the prime rib and its a big hit.I decorate and wrap all the presents.
Another thing I did was to have Santa's footsteps when the kids were younger.I had a raised ranch and the only way Santa could come in was through the back sliders. I put baby powder in a bag ,the put shoes in so the bottoms are full of powder,I put the shoes on my hands and walk the shoes in to the tree. The powder stays all day and the kids think Santa walked in. A big hit!

We have my side of the family over for a wonderful breakfast Christmas morning - this has become even more special now that we have a kiddo to share Christmas with. We then head to my inlaws house for Christmas dinner!

My dd was 3 when she first asked to help me make a birthday cake for Jesus. I had never done this before, but in her mind, this was something that should be done.. So every year, we bake a cake for Jesus, and decorate it together (now three little people) and have it as our snack when we come home from Christmas eve service. We sing happy birthday as well.
