Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

On page 19 of his book,“Knowing God,” author J. I. Packer wrote that "we are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about the God whose world it is and who runs it." Knowing that the "world becomes a strange, mad, painful place, and life in it a disappointing and unpleasant business, for those who do not know about God”, what are some of the ways that have worked for you to grow closer to our creator?

Did you complete any great bible studies that you would like to share with the group? Do you have a favorite place where you go for quiet time with God? Or maybe you have a favorite website or e-newsletter that you subscribe to for daily inspiration. Please share what you know so that others will be encouraged to grow.

I love Proverbs 31 daily devotions. They come right to your in box and are encouraging. You can subscribe here OR you can go to the blog and read then daily (or subscribe to the RSS feed). Today's was especially encouraging.

I also love reading Our Utmost for His Highest by Charles Oswald.

"Such (former) ages of ignorance God, it is true, ignored and allowed to pass unnoticed; but now He charges all people everywhere to repent (to change their minds for the better and heartily to amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins)" Acts 17:30

To not to have known Him is a pity, but worst, is to know Him and not worship (adore) Him!

what I find interesting is that people try to get to know God, but don't take time to ask a simple question: What is your name? Moses did this when he had an opportunity to ask God anything in the world in Exodus 3, but today we have access to the resources to find out God's name very easily and we don't do this. If you notice in your bible, lord is often spelled in all CAPS. If you check the preface of most bibles under divine name it will tell you that God's name was replaced, this is an absolute crime against all who want to get to know God intimately, the first thing you do when trying to get to know someone is ask their name or give them yours. It's no different for the Almighty who named Adam and then had Adam name the animals, his name is the beginning of "drawing closer to God" and then getting to know the personality, promises and sacrifices he made on our behalf (ransom of his son, Jesus) will help us to acquire a complete knowledge of God and build out faith and relationship with him.

Great input so far, ladies. I've been thinking about the approaches I have taken to grow closer to God and the one that has proven to be most effective is when I look for the message in the mess of everyday living. Many times, when I am frustrated by a specific situation or relationship, I realize that God is using it to teach me more about Him and His plan for my life. Parenting has been a particularly great classroom because the feelings I have for my children are often a reflection of the unconditional and relentless love that God has for me. When we take the time to reflect, God will help us to realize what we need to do to grow to become more like Him.

My favorite local museum is the Train Museum in Old Sacramento, CA. My oldest daughter and I love walking through there and both of us are just amazed at the enormous size of some of the trains!
