have you switched foods/formulas/water recently? this is often a culprit.
things that can help: if the baby is just on formula, introducing some apple juice is often enough to get them to go.
if baby is straining but can't get it out, a bit of vaseline in the bum hole may help it slide out. sometimes, a warm bath will allow them to poop (in the water! gross!). using a gentle hand, you can massage the tummy area. you use just the little finger side of your hand on both hands and stroke each hand down the belly, almost like a water wheel, first one hand then the other. these are the best ones that i have found naturally. there is also a suppository that you can put in that will help, but i am not a big fan of them. if you use one, please lubricate it before inserting it, and really check with a pharmacist re dosage.
good luck.

My "Baby" is now 18 yrs old, but she has had issues from birth with constipation. It's funny too, because she pooped in the cannal on her way into this world! We used the bulb seringe with warm soapy water as an enima, which worked fairly well. We did the belly massage, with leg movement too. Fruits & Juices are always a benefit.

I was the same way growing up! Was put into the hospital twice with it so bad, they used a molasses enema to clear me out. To this day, the smell of molasses makes me head to the washroom! LOL. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) often shows up like constipation, especially if she gets "the runs" at the opposite end of the pendulum swing. The other thing to consider is that a low grade issue with milk products is a frequent culprit, and milk can hang out in the body for weeks, so just giving up milk for a day or two will not prove/disprove the milk link. I live by my yoghurt now, lots of probiotics keep the body working better.

Massage your baby or toddlers stomach. Count up to 50 circular maggages. Peristalsis is slow or has stopped. Milk could be the cause. Then massage the lower part of your baby or infant's back. This stimulate the nerves that are connected to the abdomen and intestines. Fletts baby laxative is also gental and good for your baby. Lay them on their side and slowly administer the laxative. This should help! Orrrrr, Fletcher's laxative for kids is good. Ask your doctor which is best. Do you have an "Ask the Nurse" system at your children's local hospital?

You've seen it all. Now your children face the challenge of parenthood - your wisdom is invaluable. How do you strike a balance between offering advice and allow them room to learn from own their experience, even if making the same mistakes you did?
