Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

Hey all! Spring break is right around the corner and I'm wondering what y'all will all be up to! My oldest, Mae, will be heading to Mexico on a missions trip with her youth group (Mae's 15), and I'll be driving south to visit my grandmother, leaving my husband with the two boys for a week. They'll probably spend half the time camping somewhere, the other half shooting each other with paintball and airsoft guns in the back yard.

So what's everyone else up to this break?

I don't know yet. Probably sleeping in and hanging out with the kids!

We are doing anything special. I have to work at least three days that week. I'm at least going to try and take the girls to see a movie or do something else fun for a day.

BTW, I used to have a great-aunt Mae. It's been a long time since I've seen anyone with that name.

Oo! Oo! What movies are out? The last thing I saw in a theater was Slum Dog Millionaire (I had no idea what it was). Is there anything decent that will be out?

Sleeping in sounds like fun, too. :)

Slumdog Millionaire is a great movie. It's about this kid from Mumbai that goes on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. It then goes back and shows you his life and how he got to where he's at. It's a super movie.
I did learn the young children that played as his younger self and younger friend went to Hollywood for the awards they received. They were in awe but didn't care for American food at all. They had to return to "the slums" after the awards show and cnn said both children lived in horrible conditions. They did get paid for being in the movie of course and in addition to that they also had all their schooling paid for and if they graduated their college was fully paid for as well.
So it's a great movie....the conditions of the "slums" in the movie still exist and by the pictures are VERY like the scenes the movie depicts. It won me over and evidently everyone else according to the Oscars.

We have no plans but Kudos to your daughter going to Mexico on a mission trip! Hope you all enjoy your vaca!

We're taking a cruise to the Caribbean. We've never taken a big trip over Spring break so my daughters are excited.

Mary, thanks for the additional info on Slum Dog. I didn't know that about the children. As visually disturbing as the film was, I really liked it.

So no one else will be subject to boys shooting each other over break? :)

I'm not sure what we'll be doing either. For the past couple of months we've been snowed under with hospital and medical stuff because my mother-in-law is in the last stages of renal failure. We're coming close to 2 weeks out of the hospital for now but not sure how long it can last. Sure would like to do something fun, though, for a break. Would love to go see our kids.

I loved Slum Dog Millionaire, too. What a story of persistent, enduring love!

Cheryl! Hi! I'm so sorry to hear about your MIL. Is there anything I can do to help you out? I'm guessing you're a little worn at this point?

I liked Slum Dog, but the love story angle was disturbing to me. The main character, as an adult, was so two dimensional. Maybe I'm too critical of my love stories. :)
