Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

In this next section of the book, we wrap up the discussion on how we’ve lost our I.D’s in the first place and begin to discuss the secrets to finding our true identity.

I could especially relate to the comments Caryn made about “Finding your identity in Christ”. Has anyone ever said that to you? I became a Christian at the age of 30 and I can not tell you how confusing this concept was for me. At the time, it felt like a secret club that everyone else understood and that I was just an outsider who didn’t “get” it. It actually made me question my faith and whether or not I could truly be a Christian without fully accepting that my total identity was in Christ.

I have to say, I’ve never heard anyone explain it better than Caryn does in Chapter 7. It’s not about a vague concept or level of belief. It’s about realizing that Christ knows you like no other, loves you like no other and cares about you who are like no other. The peace that comes in “finding your identity” through Him, is the peace of being fully known, accepted and loved. Rather than leaving parts of yourself behind in order to be with Him, you are embracing your whole self. The parts of you that only He knows and understands. That totally rocks. Isn’t God awesome?

Let’s move through these next 3 chapters:

1.Have you ever felt out of place or mislabeled in your own church? Conversely, have you ever felt that you were honored for who you are at your church, instead of who you are expected to be by society’s standards?

2.How are the gifts that God gave you put to good use in your life as a mother?

3.What God-given gifts have come to your attention—that you may not have noticed before—since having kids?

4.What does “Finding your identity in Christ” mean to you? Has that meaning changed since reading Caryn’s book?

5.How does Jesus season your identity with salt and light?

Next, we’ll continue on to chapters 8, 9 and 10. I’ll post more questions in a couple of weeks. Have a blessed experience until we chat again!

These are great questions, Laura. I loved your personal input. My identity in Christ affects all that I do and all that I am, especially as a parent. Yesterday my son and I crossed swords for a few minutes. : ) It was unexpected. He's grown. I'm grown. But I took a step back and said, "hey buddy, you and love each other. Let's let this go. It's not big enough to harm our relationship." My faith was part of that. I felt that nudge inside that said, "let it go, Suz." I'm grateful that my identity in Christ, my relationship with Christ, is one where the Father gently speaks and directs me to a healthier response to those I love and care about.
