Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

My kids are about to "track off" from school in another couple of weeks. They'll be home with me for about three weeks, and this is going to be our first off-track experience that hasn't fallen right in the middle of summer. I've got to say, I'm kind of excited about it!

Every single day, my kids BEG me to take them to the park. They complain that we never have "fun days" and that all we do is GO HOME every day after school. Yep, this is true. After running a household all day, drowning in laundry and string cheese wrappers and Barbie clothes, and navigating the parking lot at my kids' school, I am ready to chill for just a moment. I have about a 40 minute window between the time we walk in the door and the time I need to start dinner, and I usually spend that time sitting on the patio reading a magazine while the kids lose their minds running all over the yard. Going to the park just doesn't fit in anywhere.

But while we're out of school for three whole weeks? Bring it on, baby. I'm already planning park visits, a nature walk, autumn-themed craft projects, a possible zoo outing, and a visit to a pumpkin patch. I also plan to sleep until 8 every day. We'll see how that works out. My poor children don't know it yet, but I also plan to drag them to the flu shot clinic first thing in the morning the day it opens. ::evil laughter::

Hi Laura, My older ones have a fall mini-break coming up at the end of October - they are in high school so don't really care too much about the park (ha!). They have a traditional school calender but I have colleagues with kids on the track system. They like it a lot. Some had kids in different schools on different tracks and that was hard but they survived. Back to my boys, we decided to fly them on frequent flier miles to see their grandparents. I had the miles burning a hole in my pocket and little hope of using them myself. It will be really great for both the boys and the grands to have time together. Have fun with your kiddos!

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
