Keep already cut veggies and fruits in the fridge, ready to eat. It's much easier to eat well if you have healthy options that are ready to eat when you're hungry.

I'm with the other posters: my biggest thing is that I have to eat often. I can't wait until I'm hungry; I'll go crazy then! That, and to be sure not to snack at night!

My healthy diet secret is to look at the nutritional information for everything you eat. If you don't look it up, you have no idea if that muffin you ate was 100 calories or 600 calories. I've made the mistake of just assuming that something was healthy only to be shocked by the true calorie count. I've lose almost 50 lbs by educating myself about the food I'm eating and walking 3 - 4 times a day.

My family likes to eat dried fruit instead of sweets because it's still sweet but also good for you!

My dieting tip is to totally cut out so many pasta dishes and if you do have pasta make sure it is whole wheat and cut out so many potatoes. I have learned to boil new potatoes and eat them just like that with no salt and no butter and they are really quite tasty that way. My friend just had a triple by-pass by the grace of god they found that she had had two heart attacks in the last year. She did not know and the doctor told her that the whole bottom of her heart was dead. After the surgery they put her on a low salt diet and I am following that diet also because I am a new Mom at 41. I have to be around for my little angel!

My healthy diet secrets are not really secrets. Everyone knows that the best way to lose weight is to EAT. Not eating will leave your body craving food, so that when you finally decide to eat, it will attack every ounce of fat you consume. This is not healthy at all.

Eat several small meals.

Control your portions.

Get active.

Eat at a reasonable time.

These are my healthy diet secrets.

I think eating breakfast is a huge metabolism booster, and eating mini meals thru the day helps keep it all on an even keel. OF course if you give in to a chocolate shake or whatever, it does NOT ruin everything.........you just get up and keep on goin'.

MY DOWNFALL IS DIET SODA. Eliminate the soda and your body will quit craving so much sweet stuff. Eat more vegetables and don't use alot of salad dressing or mayo. Drink extra water to flush your system.

Exercise and stick with it. When I exercise I am inclined to make healthier food choices.

When my hubby was diagnose with type 2 diabetes, I knew it was time for the whole family to make a lifestyle change (we all hate that dirty four letter word DIET). We just gardually made veggies the largest portion on our plate compared to carbs and meat. We also cut back on all "whiite" (simple) carbs and gradually switch to complex ones such as brown rice, I have fun finding getting creative and searching for new recipes for veggies/chicken and'or brown rice or whole grain recipes. I have also learn to what I call "hea;thify" old family recipes or recipes I find that aren't exactly heart or figure friendly. We started taking walks every day, and before we knew it my husband's blood sugar numbers were well under control and we we were all feeling healthier in the process. And we have made it a lifestyle change and don't feel deprived like we would have if we considered it a "diet".

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
