There is at least 20 years age difference between you and your MIL. Are you on the same page?
Does the age difference cause problems in terms of style, parenting methods, etc.
Is your MIL up-to-date? Is she set in her ways, and criticizes your lifestyle?
Is she a feminist? Does she see you as equal to her son? Do you have the same idea on what it is to be a good wife and a good mother?

I started two groups: for MILs and for DILs. Please encourage your MIL to join the MIL Round Table (for mothers-in-law). We will learn from each other.

My MIL is a year younger than my mom, almost to the day its really scary actually. And I have a great relationship with both of them. Sometimes they definitely get on my nerves, but I think that's to be expected. We are on the same page about some things --- we both have high hopes for the kids in the family and seem to be the only ones who pursue opportunities for them all, well me and my DH and her. She has custody of our nephew so for the most part we are bouncing ideas on and off each other as far as parenting my SD and nephew. My SD is in a special needs program and that's probably the only place where we differ. She has the "old timers" approach and believes anything they do in the school will be appropriate but I also think that she doesn't want to become involved in that issue because she loathes my husband's ex gf who is my SD's biomom so I think to protect her own sanity and to stay away from this woman she stays out of the school issue.

My MIL is no feminist although she has taken some feminist steps to liberate herself from an awful marriage to my FIL. She initiated their divorce and is the only one of the two still strong in who they are. My FIL is a "pity me" person and tries his darndest to start fights with her when she welcomes him into her house "for the sake of the grandkids". But I will stop my rant about my awful FIL as he is not worth the webspace :).

As far as her seeing me as an equal to my DH --- Definitely! Thankfully she appreciates my opinion as much as his and has the same level of respect for the both of us. As far as good mother and wife I do think that we feel the same way on both of those fronts...

I don't know what you would call our (MIL) gap. We have the exact opposite opinion about everything. She is mean and disrespectful, and I get really happy dreaming of the day she is no longer on this earth.
