I work with an organization called Food & Water Watch. We are launching a campaign to get better milk into public schools. Currently, many schools receive milk that is produced with rBGH, an added artificial growth hormone. We don't know enough about the health effects of this hormone; some scientists have linked it to causing various types of cancers and other health disorders.
We feel that schools should have the option to purchase milk that is produced without these added hormones. Our schoolchildren should be able to drink milk that we know is safe.
That's why we are trying to get language into the Child Nutrition Act that will specify schools can purchase artificial hormone free milk. New Hampshire plays an especially important role because Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter sits on the committee that will write this legislation.
I am so passionate about this and will be on the lookout for whereever I can support.
I do not give my son any milk products that are not free range and free from rBGH.
I wish the best for this project!
Maybe the companies that are adding an added artificial growth hormone to milk will get the message. Its not good for our kids and they shouldn't drink it!
When my son was in his teens he worked at a farm, He would bring home a gallon a day, fresh raw milk.
I see that raw milk is being sold in the stores now.
Sadly,rBGH is really only added to get more milk from the cow, pushing these gentle animals to the limit.
Thanks for all your great comments and support on this important issue. Hopefully our School Milk Campaign will be successful and all schools will have the ability to start serving artificial hormone free milk.
In order for this campaign to be successful, we really need Congress to become more aware of this issue. If you'd like to help, that would be great! Here's what you can do: Call your Congressperson and ask them to support artificial hormone free milk in schools.
You can call the House of Representatives swtichboard at 202-225-3121, and ask to be connected to your Congressperson. (Or just give them your zip code and they will find your representative for you).
Here's a link to give you an example of what to say once you are connected to the office: http://action.foodandwaterwatch.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=26807
Making phone calls is an extremely easy and effective way to make Congress aware of this issue.
With your help, we can make a difference in School Milk!

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
