Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

My son's favorite toy is a small black patent leather purse that he loves carrying around. I think it's a rather cute little bag. He also likes to put the bag over his shoulder. The teacher asked if it was okay for him to carry and play with it. We don't have any issue with him playing with purses. Has anyone else encountered this with their boys?

I never encountered this, but, um, I wouldn't want to start a phobia right now in him. Change that 'woman's purse' to a back pack or something....

I am a stay at home mom and I worry all the time about my female influence on my son. I don't carry a purse around so I have never had that issue, but my son loved to wear my headbands. At first it was cute, and to tell the truth he looked like a little girt since he has longer hair. That was the first time I started getting worried about my influence on him. I put my headbands away and he wasn't even bothered by it. If it were me I would just take the purse away, he might think that every purse is a toy and you could end up in an awkward situation.

I would for sure change it to something more boyish. My 3 year old use to watch me do all my girly things but is now not allowed due to the great influence this has. He is with me most of the time so of course if I let him he would carry a purse but, I am not going to allow or encourage it. It does not have anything to do with thinking about being gay or anything but it is just correct to guide are children. If you had a little girl and she wanted to wear camoflauge to school everyday; would you allow her to? As parents we need to guide our children in the right direction, teach them right from wrong, most of all we must be supportive. If he wants to carry a purse when he is 18 then I would say go for it. Please get him a backpack he can also wear on his shoulder. You do not want him to be made fun of. Kids can be mean. I just did student teaching. Please take my advice. With respect, Rachel

My eldest used to have a pillow that he carried around but he called it a purse. I certainly didn't have any issue with it and when the pillow became old news, much like blanket, he didn't get a new "purse".
I suspect your son will move on to something new soon. They always do but if he's in school, I'd be concerned with the other kids. Maybe if you got him a new "purse" that closely resembles a wallet or backpack?

My eldest son loved a purple baby carriage he found at a yard sale. He played with it for months. The guys at work use to make cracks about it all the time. I didn't make a big deal of it to him and he just grew out of it on his own. He's a grown healthy adult now.

I don't think its a big deal. After all, they learn from what they see. If you carry a purse, then he will too. Eventually, I'm sure he'll distinguish the boy/girl thing. But right now he just loves you and wants to be like you. I was a little nervous last week, though, when I took both of my boys (4 and 2) to Wal-Mart to pick out a toy with some money they got from Valentine's Day. My older one went straight for the Thomas trains and the little one picked up a Barbie in one hand and a Tinkerbell doll in the other. He threw them both in the cart and said "all done".

My younger boys love to get the free make up bags from Macy's when I buy Lancome products, my 13 year old has out grown such things though and he prefers backpacks over any other bag style. I wouldn't worry to much about it, when your boys get older they will change in their tastes from mommy's old purse to something else that will reflect their own personality when they start to indivduate from you.

My 13 year old used to play with dolls and cars equally when he was 4-6. Now he is way to "manly" for such things unless he's having to entertain his very young female counsins, in that case he takes one for the family.

My 6 year old went through this phase when he started preschool. The had a dress-up center at school where he loved to play. He would wear the scarfs and play with the purses and dolls and didn't think anything of it. So one day I finally asked his teacher if my son was the only boy in the class that played with the girl stuff and if I had reason to be concerned. She told me that nearly all the boys in the class played with the stuff and that research showed that boys who play with dolls and girl stuff as children are better dads as adults.
