Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

She is 13 and she knows the basics but i want to make sure that she knows more than that. I learned on my own and do not want her to do the same. I bought her a book when she was 11 and she read it but there was never a conversation about it. Any suggestions?

I did the same thing with my sons. They are almost 15 & 12. My oldest was about 9 when I bought him a couple of books. I read them first, and then handed them to him to read. He's not much of one to really talk about things, so I had to come up with stuff to get him talking. I used A LOT of TV shows to get a conversation going... still do with him.

My suggestion would be to find a movie or show that you can watch together, and start talking about it. They may seem a bit, cliche' but the after school specials are great conversation starters. Depending on what types of programs you allow her to watch, maybe something like Law & Order SVU. This show has started tons of conversations about sex with my sons. If nothing else, ask her if she read the book, what she thought about it, and if there's any questions she has for you about it.

Just be as open as you possibly can.

Hope this helps! It's always a tough subject to try to get started, but very important too.

Thank you for your response. Was it uncomfortable having to tell boys? That is a great idea about the shows and movies. I have taken her to see Juno and The sisterhood of the traveling pants. Both have issues that i could always bring up and start a conversation with. The issue with the book now is that she probably lost it and i am sure that she doesnt remember it. I appreciate your ideas and will try it out. thanks!

I have 4 children and they are now Kee'ana who is naturally beautiful and photographs well, I wish she would use these gifts she has to succed., 15 on the first of Jan.; Cyrena who is very business minded, won't leave the minivan until she has finished her homework and who through my help and the help of a few months of classes, nailed the backhandspring.!!! Then there is Sean who is 4 min. older than Tasi only because I had no C-section, the doctor just reached up and pulled Tasi out by one leg. Sean is a clown and his best friend is a girl named Karen at school. Tasi is still having problems with accidents, you know the potty training, but she is very bright and has the desire to learn. My two oldest have been and are GATE and honor students and I think I owe that to breastfeeding. Anyway, I have always been honest and matter of fact with my children about where babies REALLY come from and have described intercourse like a puzzle, meaning that the penis has to go into the, "pumpket", as the guamainians say for a Va-Jay-Jay in order for the mother and father to have a baby. As they got older, I would explain about alternate relationships and how these couples could find alternate means of having a child of their own. And about how my two older daughters bodies were changing and what I'm going through in perimenopause, T.M.I. lol. Anyway, I take comfort in the fact that my children are so comfortable with themselves that they get home and take off everything but their underwear, except the older ones, and run around in their room and on the furniture, what a childhood. Bye for now Bren PS My oldest Kee'ana doesn't smoke anything, drink, or go out with boys so thats a load off for now.
