Clarissa,

Not to worry! So many women feel the same way!

If you feel comfortable sharing, I'd love to give you some guidance ~ what's your biggest challenge?

Stuff, time, projects?

I know the answer is probably "all of them!" but if you could pick one we can get the conversation going :o)

Also, there is so much in this group & on my site that can help you out too ~ let me know your thoughts.

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the silence - I was out of town on business :o)

Glad to see y'all are settling in & feeling comfortable sharing!

Audrey ~ I would say the new house solution is a blessing & be sure to work on those habits so you don't continue down the same clutter path in a few more years :o)

Lolli ~ not to worry, we all hit times where "situational disorganization" is a challenge. Start small & give yourself credit for the baby steps along the way!

VanBurenMom ~ I will take a look at your blog in the next week or two, in the meantime ... consider that having a toddler can do lots of things to our minds, bodies & spirit! Hang in there!

Keep posting & I'll keep checking in :o)

Also, if you haven't checked out the newly remodeled http://www.simplyorganizedonline.com be sure to swing in when you've got a minute :o)

Hang in there all,

april

Ok...solved my organization problem... I bought a bigger house... LOL I know...
Seriously...it was a must. We lived in a 1300sq ft house with too much stuff that we moved out of a 2700sq ft home (which was organized). Not to mention we got rid of half our stuff from that house to fit into the small one. Now we are in a 3600sq ft home. Effortless organization. At some point, I think ya just need more space! Took advantage of the market in South Florida where the prices were outrageous when we first moved.
Now instead of survival organization, I'm looking into stylish organization now that I have space!

I am a typically organized person at heart, but I have found that I neglect my organized side during stressful times (ie--the last 8 months!). I need to get back on board!

I am quite honestly the most un-organized mom I have ever met! I tend to leave things till the last min, lose papers and forget appointments till the morning of the appointment... I am hoping to find tips and tricks to set me straight here!

Jennifer,

The thing about organizing students is, just like adults, they all have their own organizing personality. Finding a way to help them all at once is an uphill battle! Yet, not impossible.

I do a lot of work with middle school students & the one thing I've found to work with them all is the following:

Start by asking them where their homework is:

Then watch what they do (say absolutely nothing - you're observing). You're looking for how they handle the situation. Are they unsure? Or do they go straight to it in a messy backpack?

If they go straight to it, then they have an organizing style (it just doesn't look like what you were expecting). Now you know where to begin, helping them purge un-needed items regularly. (Before starting their homework everyday is the best way to implement this technique & then they'll adjust accordingly as they need)

If they are unsure, then they probably never quite understood "why" systems are in place. Too often, things are done for students & then when they are left to maintain their own belongings they don't 'get it'. In this case begin asking them what they do in the classroom situations like "when the teacher says put things away & get out ... what do you do?"

Based on their answer you'll begin to see where they are struggling. And be able to help them problem solve for the next situation on their own. Until they understand why organization is important for them you will continue to battle.

Also, using lists can help many kiddos (especially those diagnosed with ADD). Creating an "Out the door List" & attaching it to the door they leave from so it's the last thing they see before heading to school. List things like library books, jacket, lunch, backpack. You can also help them do this if they have a locker by creating a "Don't Forget" list for each class. Include things like a pencil, protractor, calculator, folder, homework, text book. As simple as this may seem for most of us adults, it's important to understand that many kids are overwhelmed by the expectations at school, fast paced change of class & the all important social life they want to keep in tact!

Give them the tools they need & you'll begin seeing improvement!
