Read my latest post... "HELP! My daughter thinks I make $1,000 per second!"

No wonder she thinks I can afford everything in sight! I think it's a disservice for children to not understand the value of things. Children need to be prepared for the real world!

I want to hear from you though! How much do you share with your children about your finances? Why?

Hi Danielle,

What we share with our children Maeve, 2 and Shannon, 13 is the gift of true abundance. Although Maeve is only 2, we have bought her "The Money Savvy Pig". The pig is divided up in seperate slots: donate, spend, save, invest. So with every dime she gets from anyone, we divide it up. Eventhough she doesn't get it, she will. My step-daughter Shannon is 13 and is ALL ABOUT BRANDS. We have struggled to teach her the same principles and she puts all of her pocket change into her money savvy pig and actually enjoys watching it grow! My husband and I are true believers that an abundant life has very little, if at all, with money. There is a great book out there called "The Emotion Behind Money: Building Wealth From the Inside Out. Happy Holidays!!!!

Thanks Melissa!

I couldn't agree more that abundance has little to do with money! And I think that "Money Savvy Pig" is an awesome idea... I'm going to have to google that... I will have to check that book out too... :-)

Maeve and Shannon are certainly on the right track and they will thank you for it!

We really try to help our boys understand the value of money and how it is earned through hard work. We also have had them tithe since they started getting allowance. I think if they know how to glorify God w/ their money now it will really help them when they are on their own.
We also talk about debt and how God doesn't want us to live beyond our means, especially when buying things of this world that you can't take with you. We just heard a sermon at church last week talking about material things and that God does allow us to have things while on this earth but he wants us to be responsible to Him and to others with our money.
My teenagers still have a lot to learn especially since they don't have a job of their own yet but I think the best way is to show them what the Bible says and to back it up in our everyday life.
:)
Merry Christmas!

What a wonderful message for your children! I think that it's a great idea for them to start understanding that money is EARNED and not ALLOWED. :-) It is also great that they are understanding that debt has consequences and costs.

Thanks you so much for participating in the discussion!
