The cost to collect, process, and bank these Cord Blood Cells can cost up to $2000. Plus, there is usually an annual fee of around $125 to store the collected cord blood. For some families, banking cord blood is an “insurance” that is worth every penny. But for others, spending this kind of money without enough evidence that the cord blood really can cure nearly 70 diseases, is simply not an option.

Have you, OR would you, invest in this kind of “insurance” for your baby?

We did not for our first child. Our assumption is that we can use the cord blood of future children if necessary. It will be a bigger decision for us when it is our last child I think! I have heard that you can donate the blood to a central bank, which I think is a great idea. If everyone did that, no one would have to pay storage, and everyone would have a bank to pull from!
No, we have not.
We did this for our first baby. It was something my husband really wanted to do.
Unfortunately, don't have the extra money for this right now.
Yes, we have with our first child. And yes, although this time it does hurt us economically, we're going to do it again.
No I haven't, nor am I gong to for this child.

Hi Everyone, I just wrote a story for our site about my decision to store my son's cord blood. Check it out:

This is our first baby so haven't before. We haven't really talked about it yet, I'm only 13 weeks. I think it's a bit different in Canada too. I'm pretty sure it's cheaper. We may look at donating also.
No I didn't. It definitely seems like a good idea, especially if it ends up being needed!
Yes, we banked the cord blood of both of our sons.

Hopefully, there's never a need for the blood, but storing it is a form of health insurance (for both the baby and other family members). We realized that we only get one chance to invest in this "insurance" and we certainly didn't want to regret our decision down the road. While we are so very fortunate that our immediate and extended family are currently healthy and not at any increased risk for serious medical problems, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared.

We strongly believe that our health is not something to compromise on. Cut corners elsewhere, if we must, but without good health, do other things really matter?

We initially thought cord blood banking was out of our price range, but did you know you can set up a gift registry at most banks and let your family and friends help defray the expense by contributing.

We chose CBR Cord Blood Registry as our bank. CBR is by far the most experienced bank and experience really counts when you're talking about something this important. Our OB also strongly recommended CBR which we accepted as additional reassurance we were making the right choice. If you choose CBR, you're welcome to use our client referral code of "MAJOR" for a $250 discount off your online enrollment at cordblood.com.
