My best way of staying in touch is e-mail, chatting on gmail, sending pictures, and twitter! I don't have a webcam though so that would help me stay in touch even better!

I use email and IM. I have been thinking of trying a web cam so it can more interactive.

Technology has taken over...everything. We rarely speak words because of texting and emails. Everything is so impersonal. I am guilty of all of these things. In fact, I am a Twitter junkie (@IamKeonte). The old-fashioned way I keep in touch while keeping travel expenses to a minimum is by: Writing Letters

Sure it's not as instant as a computer message, but it's the most thoughtful and personal way to share your world with someone. You have to think, write, and dedicate your time to writing the letter. Even with the cost of postage rising, this is still an inexpensive way to communicate. Letters are memories that we can hold on to. At any given moment these thoughts can be turned into poetry.

For now, I wouldn't mind having a Logitech camera. I love to be in the know at all times when it comes to my kids.

we use email or phone. I don't have a camera like this, but it sure is a wonderful idea.

Keeping in touch has been difficult during these times. With the rising costs of travel expenses, I find myself connecting with loved ones through Facebook and Twitter. I am constantly updating my Facebook account to share photos with loved ones who live far away from us. A Logitech QuickCam would be a great way to share updated videos of the kids and share family events!

there are so many technologies available out there now, most very inexpensive, even free, that many people choose different mediums to communicate. For my family, we use messengers most of the time, like Windows Live Messenger or MSN messenger, which has voice and video capabilities. But because not everyone we know has an account, we choose to incorporate other utilities, like QQ for those in China, and Skype. My daughter uses meebo.com to get in touch with all her contacts from msn, yahoo, aol, google and msn all in one place without the need to download and install. Thing about chat messengers is that my friends and i are on different time zones and it's very hard to catch one another. We are still experimenting with Rebtel, but some people are unable to grasp the few second window of opportunity to make it work. We also use facebook and twitter and blog as well but don't have that much time to post onto any of them as frequently as would like. So for the meantime, the sure fire way is email. it'd be nice to see the other person when communicating though, only for close friends and family. makes you feel like there's no distance.

I keep in touch through my personal blog, twitter and Facebook. This is a great camera and would be perfect to document adventures.

We use facebook daily. It's a great way to upload videos and pictures and keep in touch on a day to day basis. With one in college and family in other countries. It's the only way to survive. We also try MSN Messenger or Skype but with being in different time zones and having different schedules, we have to plan times to talk. At least with facebook, we get to read each other's posts when we get a moment.

Email has been great in that I am in better contact with distant relatives and friends but we lose some of the personal touch we used to have with phone calls. I don't do any of the social networking sites yet but am thinking about it. A web cam would be a nice addition to IM'ing so we can actually see each other.

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
