Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

My teenager wants to answer ads for "sitter wanted" & I agree so she can make some pocket money. She is very wary about who is who & that we should agree to meeting the mom & children at a park or some kind of eatery. The question I have is how much is a good & fair rate these days? If she sits for 1 toddler for daytime hours is $5/hr. a good rate?

they have really helpful sites ... just Google or go to Yahoo and type "Babysitter Rates". It mostly depends on Age,Location and Experience . Here is one to start

It all depends on the area that you live in. Search around at the going rate for a teenager!

That sounds good. Thanks I'll try that

Claudia gave great advice. The Rate Calculator can definitely help you figure out a rate for you area. She should also take CPR and first aid classes so she is prepared for emergencies on the job.

You may want to see if there is a Red Cross Babysitters course offered in your area! I took this course twice when I was a teenager and it is excellent. It teaches basic childcare skills (including how to change a diaper, gloves and all), discusses how to keep children occupied, fun things to so, and also teaches basic first aid and CPR for infants and children. You come away from the class with a valuable notebook that reviews what was learned, as well as a first aid kit, in some cases.

I hear the course has been revised a time or two since I took it too ;)

The great thing is my daughter has had all the cpr classes & was even in a health occupations class for 2 years in middle school. She takes it all very seriously as she wants to be a pediatric doctor. She is very experienced also as she has babysat for her small cousins, people on our street that have had little babies & needed help at their house while they did laundry or even just took a shower while the baby slept! She's helped give them their bottles & cereal as they got a little older. She's even watched our oldest daughter's step daughter that was 3 when we all met.

She sounds like she's off to a great start as a sitter! She should definitely keep up and work on getting lots of experience, building relationships with parents for references. I would definitely recommend her being a nanny through school, especially college. It's a great way to earn extra cash while in school!

When I was in middle school and high school, I pretty much just asked the parents what they would consider fair, and was usually paid ~$6/hr in middle school, $7-9/hr in high school. Then again, I had only taken the Red Cross Babysitter Course at that point (excellent class!), and was probably in a different area for you all. Your daughter sounds like she's quite certainly on the right track, though she might want to take the babysitter course as well, as it gives a really good overview of CPR/First Aid/Childcare. The class I took, we came away with a great first aid kit, and an excellent book that reviewed a lot of babysitting topics. I would ask around and see the going rate, and, if she's 16+, the sittercity rate calculator is excellent.

How are you defining "big families" for the purpose of your study? In some respect that's all relative, as some people consider 4 kids to be a big family and others not till there are 8 kids, or somewhere in between.
