Im a 48 year old mother of 5 daughters and a grandmother of 6, five boys and one little girl. I live in an apartment community filled with young families and a lot of young single mothers. Im often called mom by the young moms and grandma by many children. I often try to plan a lot of things to bring our little community together and give the moms things to do with their children to keep them busy and enjoy the warm weather. With the older children we have water balloon fights or super soaker wars. I buy side walk chalk and do coloring contest and then have fun washing the chalk away. I gather the kids together to clean up the trash that may have been tossed around the property and make it a contest to see how many things they can bring me and make sure the proper things get recycled and how important it is to do so. Another thing I like doing is have all the moms bring out their water toys or blow up pools and we have all the kids put their suits and and play while we all take care to keep them safe. We also do movie nights in the small rec room, making sure that the movies are appropriate the age group of the children. I love doing things that bring together our small apartment community and doing things that help with the moms in the complex. Im working on a plan right now to do a clothes swap. Thats when I will have all the moms gather the clothes that their kids have out grown and swap them out with other moms who might have clothes that fit their kids. I also like to do cookout gatherings and recipe swaps..those are a lot of fun. During all of the events that Ive spoke about, is a time for sharing ideas about child rearing and what works for one parent, might help out another. Doing things like this helps take some of the stress out of raising a family and letting each other know that they are not alone. It's very true about what is said about it "Taking a Village to Raise a Child". In this day and age of recession, we can all use a little help.
