I don't know about you, but I have found myself in that situation more than once or twice when I had to decide between a family event and an outside commitment.
Here's a guideline that works great. It's called the rule of 10's. (I forgot about it -- but needed to pull it out recently)
Ask yourself how important will each of the events be in 10 minutes, 10 days and in 10 years.
