I guess we didn't set out to prove to others our son's potential. We kinda just set out to meet basic goals one day at a time. He potty trained very late, his language was very late, we sent him to kindergarten late, etc. but goals were reached eventually. If we noticed someone that was involved with his educational process that did not have high enough goals for him, we would come in with coffee, cookies, and a smile on our faces and explain how excited we were about our son's future. They just needed to catch our vision--we needed to help in a friendly way. Here in Iowa, an IEP needs to be followed, and I was heavily involved with that process for all three of our sons. I may be over-simplifying it, but it was really a one day at a time process. Am I making any sense to you?

Marianne,

Our fourth son was diagnosed with autism when he was 2 1/2 years old. He is currently 19 years old and a freshman at college 7 1/2 hours away from home. It was a long road, but we are thrilled to say we survived. Please let me know if I can help you in any way.
