So we finally bit the bullet and are moving house. The thought of it is overwhelming – so much crap to be sorted, packed or purged. With six kids, I know you can imagine just how much crap we’re talking here. Adding further stress is the prospect of making our current house look nice enough that…

We can all give in little ways that make a huge difference. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want their children to be kind and generous people who grow up with a desire to make contributions. There is no question that the best way to teach kids is through role modeling. At Mabel’s Labels we wanted our work lives to reflect that value, so over a year ago we started a Community Relations Committee. We recently had a look at what we have accomplished and it left us with a decent case of the warm fu…

There are many nights that I lay awake long after my husband begins snoring lightly beside me. My mind whirls as I think of all the ways I’ve failed that day. Phone calls and emails that didn’t get returned; laundry that didn’t make it from the basket to the dr…

We have all heard of helicopter parenting. You know, the kind of parents that are uber involved in every aspect of their child’s life and sort of buzz and run circles around them as they grow up.
I work with a lot of parents and kids, I hear from a lot of parents and kids, and I spend all day reading about parents and kids today. Something about the term helicopter parenting wasn’t fitting right with the kinds of questions and problems that parents and youth bring to me and talk about.
Teacup…

My daughters and I are moving from New York to California.
Funny how you keep filling up boxes, but the house never seems to get emptier.
You start out super-organized, but then all of the sudden, you find yourself simply tossing everything and anything into the boxes, just to see if you can somehow make the house look emptier.
Any suggestions?

I was doing some Thinking tonight, As I sit here in this quite livingroom. And I was thinking about how I may have been able to change things, So that my kids dident have to see us struggle so bad. Or how my health would not be keeping me so sick. I was wondering if something I did as a Teenager c…

I have been refocusing on my small business why. I decided that just being home with/for my children is no longer as valid as it was 10 years ago. At this age (19, 15, 11, 12), they can do without me. Yet, I know that there is a deep longing that I need and want to fulfill. More time with my husband.
My new why is to be able to travel the world with my husband before God takes mehome. It is important for me to remember that being available for my family includes my husband. This is my the desir…

I love traveling. There is something about seeing new sights, exploring new cultures and learning about how others live that I can never get enough of. I traveled as often as I could finagle during my college and young adult years. I saw everything from Alaska to Germany to Israel and mo…

“All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.” John Gunther
We start all family birthdays the same way – we serve the birthday person breakfast in bed. It’s a tradition that the kids look forward to every year.
The event actually starts the night before. The birthday person gets to choose what they would like for breakfast the next day. They put in their order and then go to bed.
When the next day arrives, the birthday person must stay in bed until we come to serve breakfast.…

New Year’s Eve is our family holiday. It’s a special time we look forward to it all year. We plan for it, make time for it and protect it as ‘our’ time.
New Year’s Eve begins with grocery shopping. We shop together and pick out all our favorite fondue items. We buy a yummy dessert (calories don’t count) and stock up on snacks for later in the evening. There’s energy in the air as we shop. We’re all excited for our big night. An…

“The words you choose to say something are just as important as the decision to speak.” Author Unknown
We created and play the ‘Did I Tell You You’re Awesome Game?’ every day in our house. What started as a tender moment between my husband and I has turned into a game that changed our family.
My husband and I began the game while on a romantic getaway. We then came home and began using it with our kids. It spread, and now we play it with everyone in our life. The game is simple a…

I’ve been doing a bit of complaining about having to find a car that suits our family. I was whining about this on my other blog (www.thebabymachine.com).
The biggest issue has been that it seemed like no one wanted to help us out. I e-mailed contacts in the car industry and did…
