So we finally bit the bullet and are moving house. The thought of it is overwhelming – so much crap to be sorted, packed or purged. With six kids, I know you can imagine just how much crap we’re talking here. Adding further stress is the prospect of making our current house look nice enough that…

As all you mamas know, once one kid is down, it’s just a matter of time before they all start dropping like flies. I’ve got a lot of flies, so things can drag on for quite some time. In fact, with so many flies, the whole little germ fest tends to recycle and the first kid who brought it into the…

This week, my daughter (my little girl) is turning 10. Yes, double digits – what the heck?! I’m freaking out about this and I’m not sure why. It’s not a case of “wow, if I have a ten year old, I must be old”. It’s just that I’m enjoying my kids so much at the age they are right now, I don’t want them to grow up. My husband and I always say to them, “Can you do me a favor and please stop growing?” Which we are kidding about, sort of…

This morning my sister emailed me a disturbing article that literally made me sick to my stomach. I want to pose the question: We have almost 500 members in our group, surely one of you can advise us on how we can do our part in helping to put an end to this kind of abuse. Maybe someone is a social worker and deals with these types of situations on a regular basis or maybe one of you knows of or belongs to an organization that wants to spread the word about this type of crime and how we can prev…

We can all give in little ways that make a huge difference. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t want their children to be kind and generous people who grow up with a desire to make contributions. There is no question that the best way to teach kids is through role modeling. At Mabel’s Labels we wanted our work lives to reflect that value, so over a year ago we started a Community Relations Committee. We recently had a look at what we have accomplished and it left us with a decent case of the warm fu…

The
Environmental Working Group just released this new report titled “
Can Cleaning Supplies Contaminate Classroom Air?”. The answer, as you can imagine, is a resounding yes.
Although I use natural, non-toxic cleaners at home, it didn’t really occur to me that my kids spend a…

You may call it Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve or just October 31st. This annual haunting involving costumes, treat-or-treating, and things that go bump in the night is just around the corner. It is an evening filled with excitement for many children (and some adults too) who enjoy disguising themselves as their alter ego, a favorite pop idol, an ordinary household object, or a scary creature from the another world. I see it as a day that orange and black can legally be worn to…

What are Kids Doing On Facebook, MySpace and Other Social Networking Sites?
by VANESSA VAN PETTEN
This is from my series about Teens Online: Workshop Presentation where I give parents and kids a really basic explanation of teens and the Internet from a younger perspective. One of the major complaints about Frontline’s: Growing Up Online is it only covered the surface of what we, net-geners, are doing online. There are very few comprehensive explanations, nor are there many good or accur…

Last week on October 15th, many mamas were lighting candles in remembrance. That day has been designated as National Pregnancy Loss & Infant Loss Awareness Day.
I had a miscarriage soon after my first child was born. My loss was accompanied with some guilt too – finding out I was pregnant while having a newborn left me horrified. I quickly adjusted to the thought of my “Irish Twins” and was devastated when I miscarried. Then came the guilt – how could I have initially greeted this pregnancy…

When my husband and I first began our journey as parents to a special needs child, we shed more tears than I think either of us had in our lives up to that point. We cried together, we cried separate, we cried when we prayed for our daughter, and we cried when she cried. One night when I put our daugh…

I always knew that raising a child was going to involve a lot of time and energy. Looking back to my pre-parenting days, I now realize that my naïve mindset was filled with delusions of grandeur. I assumed that my child would be bright, social, motivated, clever, productive, a leader, happy, cute, popular, caring and make great decisions. After all, I was going to be a “cool” mom and reason with my child without imposing one-way boundaries.
Those grandiose ideas changed to delusions when I had…

Most of you know that I am a special needs mom because of the blog posts that I’ve written on Christian MomLogic. However, I am also the mother of a child that has special needs.
At the age of two, my husband and I took our daughter to a routine doctor’s appointment. We’d recently noticed that a mound…

My daughters and I are moving from New York to California.
Funny how you keep filling up boxes, but the house never seems to get emptier.
You start out super-organized, but then all of the sudden, you find yourself simply tossing everything and anything into the boxes, just to see if you can somehow make the house look emptier.
Any suggestions?
