Clients and other professionals ask me from time to time about children’s diaries and journals. Should parents consider privacy inviolable and the contents of a diary sacrosanct? Or rather, are parents entitled to discover their child’s secret thoughts?
The questi…

We were asked recently whether we think children's self esteem is less robust than in the past. In fact we do think children's self esteem is perhaps more fragile than in previous generations which may seem strange given that there is now a much more child-centred approach to parenting than a generation ago and an increased awareness of how important a healthy self esteem is to so many outcomes for children.
Parents receive lots of parenting advice these days and are more likely to be reading p…

When we watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, our kids caution "Don't eat the apple" but alas, Snow White bites it every time. Our Popcorn Adventure this week combines two classics - Walt Disney's first full-length animated film, which earned him an Honorary Academy Award (featuring one big statue an…

We have all heard of helicopter parenting. You know, the kind of parents that are uber involved in every aspect of their child’s life and sort of buzz and run circles around them as they grow up.
I work with a lot of parents and kids, I hear from a lot of parents and kids, and I spend all day reading about parents and kids today. Something about the term helicopter parenting wasn’t fitting right with the kinds of questions and problems that parents and youth bring to me and talk about.

"I hate you!"
"I want it, momma. I want it now!"
You know those moments. Every mother has faced them. Even the best behaved children sometimes does it. They are tired. They want something even though they know the answer is "no". They are angry, or frustrated, or even out of control.
Th

You would think that in this day and age, farm accidents that leave young children dead would be a thing of the past, but not so. Babies and young children continue to be killed by farm animals and farm equipment after being placed in harms way, probably by unsuspecting adults! It’s a tragic reminder that parents should not let common sense and
child safety go by the wayside when spending time at a farm.
Here are some examples from recent…

Last weekend we took a three-day break on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Twenty-six Ellers rented a lake house. Tables were loaded with foods like biscuits and gravy and eggs and bacon–though I ate oatmeal and cantelope. We played card games, shot pool, played Wii, and took a boating ride on rough waters.

When a toddler first starts
teething, it can be a trying time for both new and experienced. All at once, parents that had a relaxed and predictable baby, find themselves coping with one that is fretful, no longer sleeps through the night and is irritable and perhaps even inconsolable. Since a baby cannot easily tell mom or dad what the problem is, parents are often worried their baby is sick. Once their doctor resolves that concern, they are left to cope with the “teething stage.” There i…

Lindy* is a young mom with a 2-year-old and a baby on the way. The first child's dad is not a good man. In fact, he's still a boy, and an immature boy at that. He's made it hard for Lindy, financially, emotionally. Daddy #2 is better. He's supportive financially, but emotionally Lindy…

While tracking accidents involving child fatalities I try to connect the dots to figure out when and why these tragedies keep happening. I zero in on the circumstances surrounding the accident and report findings and learning’s to share to prevent the tragedy from repeating! Be especially careful and mindful about safety with your child during when in the following circumstances.
Vacations – Hotel rooms and vacation homes are usually not child proofed and can harbor unforeseen dangers for babie…

“All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.” John Gunther
We start all family birthdays the same way – we serve the birthday person breakfast in bed. It’s a tradition that the kids look forward to every year.
The event actually starts the night before. The birthday person gets to choose what they would like for breakfast the next day. They put in their order and then go to bed.
When the next day arrives, the birthday person must stay in bed until we come to serve breakfast.…

New Year’s Eve is our family holiday. It’s a special time we look forward to it all year. We plan for it, make time for it and protect it as ‘our’ time.
New Year’s Eve begins with grocery shopping. We shop together and pick out all our favorite fondue items. We buy a yummy dessert (calories don’t count) and stock up on snacks for later in the evening. There’s energy in the air as we shop. We’re all excited for our big night. An…

"I really do just want my kids to be happy! What can possibly be wrong with that?" The potential problem is that it appears there is a connection between parents focusing on making their kids happy with those children actually being increasingly unhappy.
What does the research show?
Although it seems that children who have their basic needs met plus enjoy many extras would certain…

Parents that own guns should heed
gun safety warnings and secure or get rid of their weapon before a horrible accidental death happens in their family. Recent and alarming incidents involving kids killed after finding access to firearms makes gun safety a must for parents and child care givers. Here are five incidents in July, 2009 alone!
In Haltom City, Texas, a five-year-old boy Anthony Abrego died when his 13-year-old uncle accidentally shot him with a bb gun in the back of the head a…

Brady and I took the kids to Dallas a few days ago for a “mini” vacation and to watch the Rangers play some baseball. Along the way we stopped in Fort Worth so Brady could visit with a client. Of course, taking the kids in for the client meeting was completely out of the question, so the boys and I were politely dropped off at a local “old west” museum. We actually had a great time browsing the museum – way more fun than waiting in some stuffy old office for dad to finish up with his meeting!
I…
