Vanessa Van Petten 10 Ways to Tackle Any Problem

10 Ways to Tackle Any Problem by VANESSA VAN PETTEN Learning how to approach a problem or a big project is a life skill that I think many adults do not ever learn how to do (I am still learning). Recently, I have been working with a lot of teens on how to approach and get through their big school projects. I realized there was a system to approaching all of their issues, whether it was a science fair project, a history report, and, in one case, planning the school prom. Here are 10 id… Continue

Vanessa Van Petten What Do Teens Today Really Worry About?

What Do Teens Today Really Worry About? The Top 5 Issues Revealed Teens love to talk: they love to talk online, on aim, on the phone, at school, after-school, at the mall, in the car, behind their friends back–what on earth are they talking about?…and why does sudden lock-jaw occur when parents are within a five foot radius? I decided to see what the most popular calls were at a hotline called Teenline (where teens call in to get help from other teenagers) So what are the most po… Continue

Vanessa Van Petten 5 Tips: Get Teens Interested in Politics

Me: “Do you know who is Mitt Romney is?” 16 year-old: “Oh ya, isn’t he like some rock star….right?” Wrong. Many teens today, as well as adults are extremely unprepared and uninterested in the upcoming primaries and elections. As a 24 year-old, I can honestly say that I did not become interested in politics until more recently and wish that my friends and I had been more involved from an early age. It is really important that parents help their teens and kids become more involved and informed u… Continue

Melissa Rose What I've Learned From Raising My Child

I always knew that raising a child was going to involve a lot of time and energy. Looking back to my pre-parenting days, I now realize that my naïve mindset was filled with delusions of grandeur. I assumed that my child would be bright, social, motivated, clever, productive, a leader, happy, cute, popular, caring and make great decisions. After all, I was going to be a “cool” mom and reason with my child without imposing one-way boundaries. Those grandiose ideas changed to delusions when I had… Continue

Manic Motherhood This Mom Needs a Break After Spring Break

From the journal of Manic Motherhood: Spring Break Day 1: Planned day filled with adventure and fun. Ended up with day that started at oh-dark-hundred when the dog escaped from Junior’s room, entered mine and gleefully woke me up by sticking her tongue up my nose. On the plus side, will not need to use nose hair trimmers for several months, if ever again. On the not-so-plus-side, every time I take a breath I smell dog food. Need aspirin to make it through the day. Spring Break Day 2:Continue

Mags Proms and Graduation Celebrations Highlight The Dangers of Teens Drinking and Driving

“With prom and graduation celebrations around the corner, now is the time to talk to and take action with teens about the dangers of drinking and driving”, warns Maggie Brown, President of Alive Past 5, LLC. “These celebrations invariably involve drinking, increasing dramatically the likelihood of teen drivers behind the wheel. Adding fuel to the fire is the growing group of students with concerns about their next steps and their future in today’s economy. The combination of this transitional pe… Continue

Dorothy Stahlnecker Young teens and love

I’m writing a series regarding the different kinds of love we experience hoping I’ll understand what our young teens think and feel about falling in and out of love today. Everywhere we look it seems our children are becoming more provocative and I’m hoping to establish common ground between parents that are willing to discuss the subject of intimacy (sexual behavior) their child may be participating in with their friends. After seeing the thirteen year old teen who fathered a child there was li… Continue

Suzette Valle To Ipod or Not to Ipod

"Sure, you can have a $300 Ipod. How about a $400 Iphone instead?" you sarcastically ask your child while shopping at the mega tech store. That huge grin on her face turns upside down as soon as you finish your tone-charged question. But the real question on your mind is "shouldn't I be getting these expensive gadgets for myself first?" You are not a lone parent in this technological jungle, and certainly not the only parent to second guess yourself when it comes to getting these seemingly comm… Continue
