Smoke Signals

I hate tobacco smoke. I hate the way it smells, the way it permeates my clothes and hair, and especially the way it kills. But in this season of my life as a caregiver, cigarette smoke has taken on a new and positive role-as a way to communicate with my terminally-ill sister, Gail. The doctor gave us the bad news six days before Christmas. There was nothing more they could do and my sister had "weeks to months" to live. Three days later my sister and mother moved in with my husband and me. Toge… Continue

The Cereal...er...Serial Comma

Okay, I know the title is corny, but I'm desperate. Many writers say the serial comma is passé. Well, you tell me if you think a little comma would have clarified this phrase, reportedly taken from a book dedication: "To my parents, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II." Say what? Could the writer really be the unclaimed offspring of Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II? I don't think so! Can you see that a serial comma (one placed after Mother Teresa) would have made the writer's intent clear?… Continue

And the Beat Goes On...

November 10, 2008 Ahhh...the melody of words. Don't you love it? Melodic writing truly is music to the ears. But the melody I want to talk about today isn't necessarily created through the use of lyrical, literary, or eloquent words. It's the rhythm of a well-crafted sentence, created when we develop an ear for the beat. Here are two versions each of four passages, none of which would be considered eloquent, and yet I believe they demonstrate varying levels of music through the beat. Which do… Continue

God and the Telemarketer

November 4, 2008 You may not believe this, but I know it for a fact: God talks on the telephone. Many years ago, I was putting together a talk on having a gentle spirit. As usual, I searched my concordance for appropriate verses and found many that applied to both men and women. But since I was preparing to speak to women, I typed 1 Peter 3:3-4 into my notes and then wrote, "Ladies, we must pray earnestly and daily for a gentle and quiet spirit." (Hang in there with me, men...this is going to… Continue
