Sometimes I can be such a fool. Not that people attempt to dupe me into things. It’s just that I can become blinded by a situation and make poor decisions, but then again, hindsight is 20/20, isn’t it?
Like when we purchased our house. It was a prerequisite for me in order to move forward with trying to conceive another child. Along with the dated, 2-prong electrical outlets strategically…

Online identities can be a funny thing. Sometimes you try to emulate the essence of who you really are. At other times, the essence you emulate is nothing like the real you.
Lately, I have been stressing about both.

I still remember my first patient. I’ll call her Marjorie. I was a senior in nursing school and the registered nurse I shadowed assigned me to her regularly.
It was around this time that nursing students began focusing on an area of specialty. Without a doubt, I already knew what areas interested me: geriatrics and neonatology. Not sure why, but I found the polar ends of the spectrum fascinating. And after meeting Marjorie, I discovered part of the reason why.
The routine was same every mornin…

The month of May is pure insanity in our house.
What should be a time to celebrate mothers (*ahem* May 10th) will be spent this year down in Florida on vacation, dodging Swine Flu bugs with expensive masks and gobs of hand sanitizer.
Not to mention, my husband AND my good friend both have birthdays flanking Mother’s day. And we will all be in Florida during that time.
Can you say, “Stealing my thunder?”
But it’s all good. Because I have it all figured out.
This past Easter holiday, I was in…

I can feel it coming.
The sunlight cuts through our windows every morning. Brighter. Stronger.
Robins trickle back into our yard, serenading the trees from their clay-colored chests.
Snow banks turn to puddles of water, quenching the thirst of the crisp, dry ground below.
Signs of Spring have arrived in New England. Although the temperatures are still in 40’s and low 50’s, it is finally above freezing. We no longer wear coats. Just sweaters.
I’ll take it.
Best of all, our backyard is showi…

Sometimes, I really wonder if the world is against me.
Not that I really believe that more than a few people actually acknowledge my existence, but you know when it seems like all of the cosmic forces are working against you?
For you optimistic, glass half-full kind of people, you would recognize them as life’s little “challenges.”
You know when you want something in particular. For instance, like a navy blue hoodie to match a hot pair of navy blue shoes. You drive directly to the nearest mal…

Did I mention I've given up caffeine for lent?
Caffeine in all forms
Yes. Soda, starcrack, and even…
chocolate.
It’s only been a few days, but I still have the shakes.
And of course, what happens when I decide to give up the sweet nectar of the gods?
See’s Candies contacts me to offer a $25 Gift Certificate to giveaway to my readers.
*sigh*
How many more days until this is…

Some people in this family pay attention to detail. Others don’t.
I always thought I was one of the ones who did.
Apparently,… I was wrong.

“Mommy, I’m hungee. May I haf a snack?”
“Sure. What would you like to have for a snack?”
“Spoons.”
“Spoons? Uh… I don’t think you can actually eat spoons. Would you like a snack you need a spoon for?”
“No. I want Spoons.”
“Okay, do you want a snack or do you want to play with spoons?”
“I want to eat Spoooooooooons.”
“B…

It has been almost two years since I last worked in a hospital. Two years since I donned a pair of scrubs and draped a stethoscope around my neck. Two years since a decent paycheck was direct deposited into my account. And although the past two years have been priceless while watching my daughter grow, I am still often reminded of the world of medicine.
Throughout most of my nursing career I was not a parent. So it was common for me to receive doubtful stares and odd glances from parents of my…

Happy New Year!
If I just made you double-check your calendar, then you’re probably not Chinese. Today is
Chinese New Year, and it is the
year of the Ox.
Not Chinese?
Don’t fret. There will be plenty of weird entertainment for all to enjoy. I promise.
Growing up as an ABC (American born Chinese), my family has always made a big deal about this holiday. It is d…

As thousands of people are sinking their teeth deep within the pages of the latest vampire series, I’m not.
I have a few issues. I pick up a book, read a few pages, then suddenly it’s dinner and I have T-minus 25 minutes to whip up something the family is willing to eat, but will not result in an ER visit due to a clogged artery or malnutrition. Then there are dishes…and the laundry…and my Google Reader on the verge of explosion…and oh yea, my family to attend to.
Point is I have not been able…

Thanksgiving has never been one of my favorite holidays. When I look back on how we spent it every year as a family, I can certainly see why.
In case you don’t already know, I’m Chinese. Growing up in South Florida, many of my friends often referred to me as a “banana”- yellow on the outside,…

I am incredibly sensitive to cold weather. Living in Florida for over 24 years and then California for 5, has in no way prepared me for any real weather (besides hurricanes of course). Although I am enamored with the gorgeous fall landscapes here in Massachusetts, I have not warmed up to the chilly temperatures just yet. And as the mercury dips down a little more each week, I find that our time spent outside trends with it. Thankfully, Boston is a well-equipped, bustling city with plenty to do y…

The final days of October are upon us. Although this week may present its share of costume debacles and battles for remaining bags of Snack Size candy (all which will promptly become 75% off on Nov 1st), there are some other scary events around the blogosphere to consider before Halloween.
Are you a blog addict? Are you incapable of sipping your first cup of coffee before checking your Reader? Do people in your life live with the realization that all embarrassing moments and dialogue are fair g…

Neighborhoods will soon fill with jack-o-lanterns, haunted houses, and little ghosts and goblins. Are you ready to send your little pumpkins out for an evening of trick or treating?
As Halloween quickly approaches, now is the time to stock up on treats, make last minute costume adjustments, and most importantly, plan for Halloween festivities.
If you have young children, you may be seeking…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or playing endless Wii in denial) the economic state of this country is no secret, all signs point to a recession. If the widespread job loss and erratic spikes in financial markets aren’t daunting enough, briefly tune into CNBC and allow Suze Orman’s screaming to scare the bejeebus out of you. As the effects of the financial crisis begin to trickle down, many feel the need to trim the fat. A sudden shift in lifestyle seems crucial as needs outweigh wants,…

Are you registered to vote in the upcoming election?
Are you sure?

I’ll admit. I can be a bit of a tight wad. Especially when it comes to fashion. Until I purchased a wedding gown, I had never paid $100 for anything in my closet (including purses and shoes). Don’t get me wrong. I do like fashion. Cute jeans with the ability to lift and tighten rear excess baggage are a staple in my wardrobe. And I love wearing flowing skirts and dresses that elongate my legs. But if I have to take out a second mortgage to buy them, then no thanks.
However, there is one minor g…
