Real Stories. Real Advice. Real Moms.

I'm not very good at it, making friends that is. Which might surprise many people. Because I have a lot of friends. But what I struggle to do is to nurture those friendships. I write. I travel. I speak. I am mom. I am wife. I have deadlines and special events and ..... I guess what I am saying is that it takes time to nurture friendships, and time is the commodity that appears to be the most in demand. But I have time for other things...

Can you relate?

I just discovered that a friend is in the hospital. I should have known that. If she had been on Facebook or Twitter, I would have known. If I hadn't been in Dallas last week and had been in church, I would have known. But when I talked to her and said, "Sis, why didn't you let me know?", her response was "I know how busy you are."

And that's a problem. Because I'm not too busy for this friend, but somehow I'm sending off signals, or I'm living in such a way that I've convinced myself and others that I don't have time for these very important people in my life.

Is it okay to make March resolutions?

My New Year's resolution was to get in shape. Nine pounds down. Nine to go. So, I can stick to a resolution. My March-almost-April resolution is to foster my friendships just a little bit better. To make time for lunch, or a phone call, or just to hang out for no reason.

I'll check back in and let you know how it's going.

Suzie

I completely understand how you both are feeling. I have what I would say a few close friends and many many acquaintances. Because I'm constantly running with the kids, selling Tupperware, welcoming people into my home when they first move to base since I live on a Marine Corps base in Japan, my close friends feel like they don't want to bother me with anything going on in their lives. I feel like I miss out on so much and miss out on the opportunity to help them when they need it because the signal I give off is that I'm always so busy and tired that I just don't have the time. My closest friend won't even call me anymore to pick her kid up from the bus when she can't. I guess I'd rather be a part of my friends' lives than be constantly running for acquaintances. But, it's hard to just stop helping people out when that's been my life for the past three years. I guess it's hard to please everybody, including myself.

I struggle with this as well. Just today I was thinking, "I'll never be able to do it all well" - when you're a mom with lots of hats on something has to give, and unfortunately for you and I, that seems to be friendships - at least part of the time.
I had a friend get frustrated with me last week. I had a small surgery and she was upset that I didn't let her know ahead of time. But, it's hard for me to find to call her and having to tell her something like that - I just felt like it would add stress to her life. I think I was wrong, though. Our friends want to know us - they like us for who we are, stress and all. :)
Next time, I'll call her.
