When I was young my mom joked that I could sleep anywhere, anytime. And it was true, at least until about 15 years ago when I entered the strange world of insomnia. It became a part of me. I learned to lie still and rest the best I could at night, sometimes sleeping, sometimes staring at the ceiling. I took naps on Sunday afternoons (strange, but I could always fall asleep almost instantly). I tried every remedy, except for the prescription pills that had addictive side effects. In time, I learned to cope with insomnia. And then about a year ago, something happened. I started sleeping again. Not always, but more than not and the difference was remarkable.
Momlogic is discussing this topic today with Jill Spivak, author and co-founder of Sleepy Planet, Inc.
How am I moving past insomnia? It had become chronic and was affecting me during the day. So I started fighting back every way I knew how:
I eliminated caffeine from my diet. I transitioned from work (computer) to non-work as much as I could earlier in the evening or day. I started taking Melatonin, which shut down the racing thoughts and allowed me to feel sleepy, even when I woke in the night. I didn't eat late; in fact, the earlier I ate the better I rested.
For some, sleep comes naturally. For me, I have to work a little harder at it. Just admitting that was hard at first. What was wrong with me? Why was it such a struggle? I may never have all the answers. I have a clue to some of them. But what I do know is that a good night's rest is critical and it's worth fighting for.
