White Lies
In an earlier post on http://www.thevuvclub.com/, "Pants On Fire," I told you I hate liars.....but that statement did not take into consideration the occassional teller of the white lie.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Imagine if you lost your filter? The filter that separates what you think from what you say? And suddenly you are like Jim Carrey in "Liar Liar," unable to speak anything other than your version of the truth.
Would anyone like you? Would anyone tolerate you? Some people applaud "direct-ness," but is honesty really the best policy or are white lies a part of the social contract?
Your friend says, "Look at me. I put on so much weight."
Truth: You say, "I'm guessing between 10 and 15 pounds since I last saw you."
White lie: "I don't know what you're talking about. You look fabulous."
Your friend says, "How do you like my haircut?"
Truth: You say, "What haircut? Looks like you've had the same hairstyle since high school?"
White lie: "It's stunning."
Your friend says, "My son is just energetic and enthusiastic and I don't know why his teacher finds him disruptive."
Truth: You say, "Can you spell R-I-T-A-L-I-N?"
White lie: "Bill Gates was hyper as a kid...look what happened with him?"
Your daughter's friend's mom says, "My daughter
would never say that."
Truth: You say, "Have you read 'Queen Bees and Wannabees?"
White lie: "There must be some misunderstanding."
Your colleague at work says, "I didn't get the promotion."
Truth: You say, "Maybe if you improved your job skills and performance...."
White lie: "You got robbed! You deserved that promotion!"
Lying is bad...yada yada. But every woman knows there is no acceptable answer to "Do I look fat in this dress?" We are taught at a young age that politeness is sometimes paramount and it is best to avoid hurting other people's feelings....so we weigh the truth and the white lie...do the cost benefit analysis and ask ourselves, is it worth modifying the truth when the truth can only inflict hurt without any upside?
I say sometimes it is.
Tell me what you think...
and don't lie to me
